Ask Al: Volumes for Different Models

I saw an earlier question about volume and it’s something I’ve wondered about a lot. I’ve been surfing for 30 years on short boards and am still pretty keen. I tend to think it’s all about dialing in the right volume so you can easily catch waves and maintain momentum but not so much that you can’t bury your rails for bottom turns and carves. Why would I want a Fred Rubble or a DFR at a different volume than say a Neck Beard? What other variables offset the primary variable of volume and what is their relative impact, assuming a similar wave type (ie California vs a reef break), when you’re focused on the dual goals of catching waves in crowds and maintaining a reasonable level of modern performance.

Thanks,
Scott

Al responds, “Flatter rocker in a board will offset volume. If you are looking for better paddling or easier speed generation, flatter rocker may achieve this better than extra volume.”
