Weirdo Ripper by Yadin Nicol

Model Description

For that small to medium all-around board in your quiver is the Yadin Nicol-created “Weirdo Ripper.” Development began with Yadin in a CI shaping bay getting weird on Al’s Pod design. The Weirdo Ripper spent over a year behind the scenes in development with Kelly, Dane, Nathaniel and Yadin until ultimately being unveiled at the 2012 US Open by Dane Reynolds, who displayed the board’s advantages in the tricky Huntington conditions.

The Weirdo Ripper is a user friendly design, full volume for easy paddling, wide point forward, V bottom, square-winged swallow that works well as a thruster or quad.

Ride the Weirdo 2” to 5” shorter than your height.

That URL is kind of lame man, you guys make great boards, but that thing is not cool.. what about a beginner? what about height? it is just too simple. would be really cool if you could rate skill level a bit more, and then put in your height and weight, and voila – here is the board or boards that will work for you.

Bill – not meant to be an absolute answer for what board to ride. Novice by definition: “a person who is new to the circumstances, work, etc., in which he or she is placed; beginner” This tool is more for experienced surfers to learn about volume to weight ratios, height is not as relevant for board selection. Cheers

    My Weirdo experience -

The board mezmerized me when I first set eyes on it. I knew I had to have one. I’ve been surfing retro twins and quads now for over ten years so I felt I needed a change of direction.

I’m 5’10″ 200 lbs and also need a little floatation so this ‘NEW’ board looked perfect. I ordered a 6’0″ 20 3/8″ X 2 3/4″ Weirdo w/ a lot of inside help from Ando, Big Scotty, and Dougy.

When i received the board it was amazing – Full acid splash resin tint – set up for quad or thruster. This thing felt unbelievable under my arm – Again perfect balance from tip to tail. But what intrigued me the most was the bottom of the board. The magic starts about midway back with the deep hulled channels that are super flowing w/ ‘V’ out the tail, and the tail rocker starting from the wings also out thru the tail. Beautiful, but again all pretty new to me as a whole.

My first go out was at Rincon w/ my buddy Steve ‘O’. In the beginning of that session I rode it to far forward, like I was still on my old boards… It was pushing water, not really working right. I started placing my foot farther back, and the farther back I went the more control I had. And the more it wanted to do exactly what I was thinking. It was unbelieveable. Now I’m practically stepping off the tail where I ride it best. Once you find that spot the board does whatever your thinking exactly when you think it. It’s not a second or two behind, I promise…
I’ve been riding it as a thruster because I wanted to surf top to bottom and back again, but as I get used to it and after watching Kelly and Dane surf those contests w/ it I think I’m going to set it quad for the next go out, and loosen it up a bit.

I want to say – Mahalo and Aloha to Channel Islands for being such great friends throughtout the years. It’s more like an Ohana. – THIS IS TO ALL YA ALL –

I really look forward to the next twenty years surfing on the best best boards and w/ all the great friends along this wonderous coastline of ours.

    ** dougy rules ** :)

I’m 6’1 about 175 pounds. Curious what size you’d recommend me for weirdo ripper. My high performance short board I’m using is 5’11. I was thinking either 5’6 or 5’7, what are your thoughts?

Im 5’3 and 140 lbs. so about how much would one cost considering my size?

    • CI Surfboards05-22-13

      Hi Jacqueline,
Not sure what size you want, but likely short so suggested USA retail on a 3-fin Weirdo under 5’11″ is $640. Also use this link http://cisurfboards.com/suggested_boards.php to find your size. -CI

I saw this board and knew it was a winner. I have been riding a 5’10″ pod for the past year or so and i just could not get off it. As boards do, they get stale and i needed change, alas, along came the weide. I got hold of a 5’10″ standard dims and rode it as a thruster and i have to admit did not enjoy it at all, it was jumping all over the place and felt like i had no control. I knew there had to be a good fin combo for this board so i changed it to a quad setup and immedietly It came alive, so much speed and full rail carves. Its snappy, floaty and full of control.
    What a winner
    regards
    Mike

what size would you recommend this weirdo for me? I am 46, 5’11″, good physical shape, weigh 180. I am just leaving beginner land, and learning more. I do not consider myself a Novice just yet, but I am getting there. I did your board finder deal, and it says a 5’9″ that seems short? I was thinking about a 6’0″ or 6’1″ even. There was no choice for just below novice on that deal… thanks!

Joey, the selector is a good reference but no the absolute answer for all surfers. You can always go longer/bigger to allow for more wave catching and stability, but you sacrifice performance. Nothing wrong with the 6’1″ for someone who is looking to catch waves and have alot of fun. Its still short enough to do progressive turns, go 6’1″!! – CI
