Jordy Smith’s Surfboards

March 21, 2013 / Jordy Smith

My general size shortboard is 6’2″ – 6’2 1/2″. Just over 19, 19 1/4″ wide. 2 1/2″ thick, sometimes a little over. 2 5/8″ and shave down the rails. For the most part, those are my dimensions.” — Jordy Smith

hi – what sort of tail width does Jordy go with for a shortboard and a step up. cheers

      Bob-
      Sorry for lagging!
Jordy rocks 14 3/8 on his shorties (DFR, Rookie) at the moment.
Step ups get narrower from there depending on the length and wave condition they are intended for, but drop about 1/8 every inch or two down to about 14″ on a 6’6″
      Cheers – CI

      DFR 6.2.5 19.25 2.5 – 31.1L
      DFR 6.2 19.375 2.5 – 31.1L
Looks like the 1/2″ in length equals the 1/8″ in width

    Hi CI! Sick clip.

Just a quick question to ask about the volume of Jordy’s boards. What does he tend do surf, volume wise?
His boards look pretty flat too. Does this tend to be the case in his rocker preference?

    Many thanks!

    • CI Surfboards04-08-13

      Matt,

      He surfs around 32L.
He surfs medium rocker – mostly Rookies, DFRs, Flyers, and Weirdo Rippers

ASP has him at 6’2″ 190lbs, which jives to how he orders boards

Just wondering what materials the boards he rides are made from? EPS?

    (reply)
    • CI Surfboards04-18-13

      Damien,
Jordy rides 90% PU/PE constuction. Occasional EPS.
      Cheers CI

“yeah i’ll go through like 80 boards per year”, that’s great if you don’t have to pay 800 bucks for a board.
As opposed to us NORMAL folk who are lucky to get 2 boards a year and have to make them last !
Not to mention the absolute waste going into the environment, thumbs down channel islands, really not cool.

      Hi James,

Being surfers and spending all our time in the ocean, we very much appreciate your concern. The upside of this consumption is that well over half these boards are traded back to CI, and either re-sold to “normal folk” who ride them in place of buying a new board, or the trade-ins are auctioned off raising 10s of thousands for charities, including Surfrider and Heal the Ocean.
      Cheers CI

Hi, i’d like TO know what Would BE the volume of a custom order DFR 5’8×18’1/2×2’3/16? And if you think is good for me being advanced level with 5’6 for 145lbs?
    Thanks

    • CI Surfboards04-25-13

      Yann,
      DFR 5.8 18.5 2.1875 – 23.9 L
Those would be advanced dimensions and work well for a good surfer
      thanks – CI

Ok thanks a lot, and liters for a 5’8’1/2×18’3/8×2’3/16 please? And what do you think Would BE the best between those two type of personal dimensions for me with my height and weight. And yes, surfing for 20 years, being a coach, no problem with the expérience and level.
    Cheers.

      Hello Yann,
      DFR1 5.8.5 18.375 2.1875 – 23.9L
The the 1/8″ in width you dropped was made up by the 1/2″ in length. 1/8″ width increments on performance shorties usually – about .2L in volume
Both dim sets will work fine for youas an advanced surfer. The narrower longer may feel slightly more drivey while the wider shorter alightly more loose. They are so close that it may be hard to detect.
      thanks – CI

All right. Got strong stance for my weight. Don’t think i should go a bit longer?

    (reply)
    • CI Surfboards04-26-13

5’8″ 1/2 should be plenty for someone who is 5’6″

  12. Yann04-26-13

Sorry but also i didn’t get the meaning of “increments on performance shorties”?

    Hello,
I would like to know which sizes who advise for model DFR and Fred Rublle.
I practice surfing for 24 years, my level is advanced and my measurements are as follows:
    Height: 6’0
    Weight: 178lbs
    Thanks

    • CI Surfboards05-20-13

      Hello Andre,
      Start with this link: http://cisurfboards.com/suggested_boards.php
      The tool is saying DFR 6’0″ x 19 x 2 3/8 = 28.3L or DFR 6’1″ x 18 7/8 x 2 3/8 =28.5L
      thanks – CI

        Hello,
Thank you for the reply. I would like you to give me your honest opinion about what are the ideals measures for a Fred Rublle model for me:
my weight and height (6’0 and 178lbs).
I take the opportunity to ask you what are the ideal fins for my weight, Large Al Merrick or Medium Al Merrick?
        Thanks very much
