Timmy Curran Board Demo: Riding a Fred Rubble

February 6, 2012 / Timmy Curran

Well, now I know why a lot of the guys on the Channel Islands Team are talking about this board… It is one of the best short boards in the line. With all the hype, I wanted to use some newFuture-istic fins to see if it still lived up to the word on the street (& that it did). In the last few months I’ve wanted to experiment with fins, and these were the perfect fins to use.

The new Elevens are very interesting. When I first got them I doubted they would even work. I told Kyle (who makes these vids), that I may be coming in after my first wave. To my surprise they had no drag, and were opposite. They actually made the board feel really fast. When I looked at the fins, I thought that they would do what the Laird Hamilton Hydrofoil did, lift the tail out of the water. Not quite to that extent, but something close. It was opposite, it was actually more difficult to get it out of the water when attempting airs. If you are bored with your normal fins, they are for sure worth a spin. Best way to get them would be to go to Futures Fins.

With all that said, back to the board… It was nice getting to test the Fred Rubble in some really good waves, so blessed to live and surf where I do. The rocker in the board was exactly what I like, right in the middle. Not to much and not too little. When boards have too much rocker they are usually much slower to paddle on. I am a fan of this board because the rails are slightly pinched, which made it hold in really well on turns. The shape of the board is a very standard shape, it’s what I would want for my every day short board shape. I would definiantly recommend this board for all types of conditions, it’s just one of those boards. Can’t wait to try it with my favorite Vector fins. Not a lot of explanation about this board other than get one if you can.

Next board blog on the Semi Pro, there will be more rights…You have my word. See y’all in the water.

    Hey CI,

I’m 5’8″, 155 pounds and would class myself as an advanced intermediate(blow tails, little airs etc.) What size Fred Rubble would you suggest?

    (reply)
    • CI Surfboards02-07-12

      Kye,
      Try a 5’9 x 18 5/8 x 2 3/16 (24.5L) It’s just a little wider than Timmy’s in the vid. He is about your size.

    Hi CI
I’m 5’4″, 135 pounds intermediate to advanced. What size Fred Rubble would you suggest?
How the tail option Kelly rides (rounded? rounded pin?) on his Fred Rubble? affects the board?

    (reply)
    • info02-10-12

      Hi Jason,
We recommend our stock sized 5’6 x 18 ¼ x 2 1/16 Fred, or a custom ordered 5’5 x 18 1/8 x 2 Fred. The squash is the most versatile option for all surf conditions, where the round pin works best in good quality surf.
      Best, C.I.

    Hey CI,

I’m 5’11″, 160lbs and an intermediate SoCal surfer. I surf a 5’8″ stock POD and a 6’0″ rounded pin M4. What size Fred Rubble would you suggest?

    Thanks!

      Hey Michael,
Our calcs call out a 5’11 x 19 x 2 5/16 based off what you are riding now and your size.
      It’s 27.2L and rated for a 185lb expert

      Birk,

You are very light so likely will need a custom, around 5’5′ 17 1/2 x 2.

      We suggest an SP12 510 x 18 1/2 x 2 1/4 at 25.4 for your size and good waves.

Hey, I live in California, and I surf at Rincon Beach. I was wondering what board you would suggest for the waves there. I am intermediate to advanced (Cutbacks, 180 off airs, etc.). Dimensions would be helpful.
    Thank you.

    • CI Surfboards04-12-12

      Jake,
At your weight try a ReMix or Semi Pro for Rincon.
      REMIX 58 x 18 1/8 x 2 1/16 at 22.1L, a 59 x 18 1/8 x 2 1/16 at 22.4L, or a 58 x 18 1/4 x 2 1/8 at 22.7L

      SP12 57 x 18 1/8 x 2 1/8 at 21.9L, a 58 x 18 1/8 x 2 1/16 at 22.1L, or a 59 x 18 1/4 x 2 1/8 at 22.6L

    Hi CI,

Great site! Would a Fred Rubble fill the quiver gap between a Semi Gun and a small wave board?
Will this board work in good waves in Indo? Bali/ sumatra?
    Height: :5″7 Weight: 145lbs

    Have a 6’3 x 18 3/8 x 2/14 rounded pin for the big days and a 5’7 x 19 1/4 x 2 1/4 for small days..
Do you recommend a Fred Rubble to fill the gap? was thinking of a stock 5’10.. could prob ride the 5’9 but reckon the extra volume and length will make it more versatile? Thanks

Hey I’m 154 lbs around 5f 8, an intermediate surfer (floaters cuttys snaps ect) trying to improve to the next level. I mainly surf a js kingpin 5.10 but I feel it’s to wide and chunky for me. What dimensions Fred rubble would you recommend? Cheers :)

    • CI Surfboards08-20-12

      Daniel,
Start here to get an idea of what volume works best for your weight
      http://cisurfboards.com/suggested_boards.php
To improve you want to ride as short a board as you can, just keep in mind smaller means you catch less waves, so you need to find a balance.
      thanks

      Mitch,

If you are liking that Dumpster, then your Rubble shoudl be 3″-5″ longer than that.

      Hey Felix,

Did you try our board selector?
      http://cisurfboards.com/suggested_boards.php
generally you want to ride a Fred around your same height. But if you want to order it custom at 5’11″ to make it more of a grovel board, go 1/4 wider and 1/8 thicker that a stock 5’11″
      cheers – CI

Hi, I am a 5’8 x 140 lbs Italian intrmediate surfer (only basic
    maneuvers). I was used to ride a Proton 60 x 18 3/8 x 2 3/16 (25 L),
which was great but hard to paddle in slow take off waves conditions.
What dimensions of Fred Rubble do you reccomend for me?

Hi guys it looks like you get a lot of this but it’s probably because you’re the experts. I weigh 152 and am 6’0. I ride a 5’11 DFR and a 5’6″ dumpster diver. I like the liters to be around 25. What size rubble or new flyer would be best for me for more crumbly surf? I would call myself intermediate to advanced. thanks!
