Kelly Slater’s Quiver for Volcom Fiji Pro 2012

June 3, 2012 / Kelly Slater, Quivers

Kelly has been spending a lot of time on Tavarua this past year and really enjoys both Cloudbreak and Restaurants–finding them challenging and rewarding. He has been playing around with nose widths and keeping a good amount of volume under his chest on a lot of his bigger boards. It’s really important to be able to drive through the tube at Cloudbreak and be able to call on short-bursts of speed when you need them. There’s a lot of water moving so that extra thickness in the center really allows for great paddling and gets you into the bigger sets with fewer strokes. He likes his rail still a bit on the thinner side so that he still keeps the sensitivity of a thinner board on turns. For Resturants, Kelly will most likely turn to a smaller board that turns tight in the pocket and generates a lot of speed so he can cover some distance in the tube but not out run it–staying deeper for longer will be his goal there.

    Dear CI

Whenever an ASP CT event is coming up i always enjoy looking at the quivers these pro’s are riding. But there has always been a question brewing in my mind, How do they fit 8+ boards in one bag. For Kelly’s quiver for Fiji he has 11 boards all ranging from 5’9 to 8’6. The question i want to ask is what board bag or bags does Kelly use?

Good Luck to KE11y and Best Wishes to CI

    Hey CI,
Could you please tell me what dimensions and volumes for a Rubble, DFR, Motor Boat Too, and Proton Step-up? I am 4’11 and weigh 90 lbs ( expert ).
    Thank you so much

      Hey Kalum,

Your boards would be all custom as we do not build stock for 90lb experts.
The Rubble and DFR you could ride around your same height at 4’11″ x 16 3/6 x 1 7/8
      The MBtoo about 4’8″ x 17 x 2
      Proton Step 5’1″ to 5’6″ x 16 3/4 x 1 7/8
We will run these in CAD and get the volumes for you this afternoon
      thanks

        Hi CI,

I’m 5’9 138lbs, 29yrs, slim build and probably not growing anymore (unless I get an old man gut :) ….

The board selector suggests the 5’3″ MBToo @ 21.9L. Is 5’3″ not a little too short for me and 21.9L not a little too little volume?

I currently ride the 5’8″ Fred Rubble at 23.3L and love it.

        Thanks,
        Matt

          Hey Matt,
really sorry for lagging, if you ever want a faster response you can always email us: [email protected]
The selector is based off most “common” body types. Being thinner sometimes means tweaking or custom ordering.
Being the Rubble is working for you, then we want to fit that 23.3L or sometimes slightly more into a shorter rail line in a small wave board like the MBToo – so look at the 5’5″
          Cheers CI

a 5’10″ Gravy or MBTOO 59 x 19 1/4 x 2 3/8 (27.9L) may work for you, but considering your height you may want to order a custome a couple inches longer at the same dims.

I have a round pin Tangent 5’4, 16 1/4, 1 7/8 and was wondering what the volume of that was so I can base that on ,my next board. I was also wondering what the volume of a Rookie 5’6, 17 3/8, 2 squash would be. How would that go in average day – day surf.

    Hi CI!

I´m 33 years old, 183 lbs, 5´8″, a weekend intermediate surfer, and I usually surf mushy and somewhat hollow waves, from 2 to 6 ft, I need a new surfboard and I am thinking about a 6´0″ x 2 1/2 x 19 3/8, good width on nose as well as volume under the chest, for helping on paddling, squash tail and 5 FCS plugs. What is your opinion about the dimensions and what board do you recommend?

    Thanks.

What would be the advantage of Kelly riding the Fred Rubble roundtail on the final day at Cloudbreak as opposed to a Semi-Pro? Is it just a matter of preference or does the roundtail Rubble ride significantly different from the semi-pro?

What would the volume of a Fred Rubble 5’3, 18, 2 squash tail be?

    Would that be custom?

      Noah,
Yes we don’t stock shortboards boards that small, it would be custom.

Quick question. What were the dimensions on Slater’s winning Fiji 5’9 Fred Rubble rounded pin? And how much does Kelly weigh?
I weigh 170lbs and want to order the same board but maybe a little bit thicker. Thanks for any input on these magic boards.
    Happy trails

      SLi-
5’9″ x likely 18 1/4 (possibly 18 1/2 as he has both we are waiting to hear from him) x 2 1/4 Quad.
      He is 165lbs.
He really enjoys low volume so consider ordering yours slightly wider and thicker

Hello CI. What glassing is Kelly getting for his quiver? Any EPS boards? I’m considering ordering a SP12. I demoed one over this past weekend and loved it. What are the volumes for each of the following boards:
    SP12 6’0″ 18 5/8 x 2 5/16 – Round Pin, 5 fin FCS
SP12 6’1″ 18 3/4 x 2 5/16 – Round Pin, 5 fin FCS (this is the one I tried but want to know the volume)
    Thanks,
    AC

    (reply)
    • CI Surfboards06-22-12

      AC,

      This volume is on our board selector SP12 = 61 x 18 3/4 x 2 5/16 (27.0L)
      And the SP12 + 60 x 18 5/8 x 2 1/4 (26.3L) So the 2 5 1/6 will likely be around 26.5L
Kelly orders about 1/4 of his boards in EPS with Epoxy layup or with PU blank + Epoxy layups.
      Mostly still PU + polyester.
      cheers

Not sure what you current quad is, but Kelly is using the McKee fin placement. http://www.mckeesurf.com

Hi I need to order a couple of guns for a trip to Pascuales Mexico. I’ve never ordered a gun before and the biggest board that I’ve surfed is a 6’10″ step up. These are strictly barrel boards that I’m looking to get into the wave early, what would be a good specs tp order? I’m 5’10 180 lbs and have been surfing for about 18 years. I’m looking for 2 boards. Please let me know ASAP so that I can submit my order to the shop.
    Thanks

      Ryan,
You should base guns off your current shortboard dims, or the board you mostly ride in head-high good waves.
If it is STRICTLY barrels, go about the same width as your shorty or 1/4 narrower, and beefen up 1/8 to 1/4 in thickness.
Hit us back if you have Qs
      thanks

    Hi CI!

I am thinking of purchasing a CI here in NZ. I am 90kg’s, 184cm tall and surf to level just below the local sponsored guys (so not too bad). I am thinking of getting a SemiPro12 6’4 does this seem right to you? I am a little worried as I have always had square or squash tails. Also the local supplier here (Backdoor surfshop) gets your CI surfboards from South Africa. Is there any difference in quality (ie glassing etc) with those made in Oz or the US? One last question, what is the rear fin Ke11y alway keeps in (as he only changes is side fins), is it the rear fin from the K2.1 PC?

Thanks guys, hi from NZ and cheers for your awesome shapes!

    Leon

    (reply)
    • CI Surfboards11-26-12

      Leon;

Go here to find a board and volume combo that will work for you; http://cisurfboards.com/suggested_boards.php
Given you have swell in NZ the round tail may actually feel better for you.
There is no difference in quality in the boards made by our factory in Durban. They import the US resins and cloth to match our construction as they are not avalable in South Africa, and are trained here in SB every year.
Will find out about Kelly’s trailing fin, but your guess is prob correct.
      thanks CI
