Kelly Slater’s Quiver for Bells 2012
I guess you could say that posting a shot of Kelly’s Bells quiver gives away the mystery aspect that he may not show up at the event this year!
Kelly + Bells forecast:
1. Points to a possible quick finish
2. Well overhead waves the first week of the event
3. Kelly currently posted up in OZ
All signs he’s probably going to show.
This year, Kelly has spread out his quiver a little bit — not necessarily in length but in widths. All boards with slight concave decks (instantly gives you that groove for your feet that sometimes takes days or weeks to happen naturally, as well gets you closer to the water line and really enhances the connection with your board). They range from 18 1/4″ for the lower tide pockety days or up the point towards Rincon to 18 3/8″. For the combo days as wide as 18 5/8″ for the high tide flatter faced smaller days. Bells is a flat faced wave so a little bit more width may be very helpful out there.
Margrets is a great wave to prep for Bells. The waves share many similarities and from the look of Kelly’s 5’8″ x 18 3/8″ 5 fin squash tail out there, he could opt for something very similar. If he does change it up, you may see him on a round pin epoxy version of that 5’9″ five fin (the round pin giving him a touch more hold than the squash and allowing for really clean sweeping or drawn out lines on his cutbacks and top turns — which is optimum for the long walls of Bells).
He has also ordered a 6’0″ round pin 18 3/8″ x 2 1/4″ tapered at the rail with a little more volume, 2 3/8″ at the center for the biggest Bells days. The thickness under the chest will allow for easy paddling and wave catching on those days or heats that jet ski assist isn’t an option or he just wants to sneak up the point and catch a wave underneath his competitor.

Hello.
Good quiver, but I have a question, the surf boards means almost the same, the differences are relly short.
Could you explaim the diferences in the water, like what surfboard is faster, or what surfboard is bether to make manouvers? and Why?
Thanks and Best Regards.
Victor
Hey Victor,
Honestly bro – your questions would take several hours to answer.
You are asking for a clinic in design.
faster = flat rocker
Manuever = curvy rocker
You need to decide the combination which works best for you
I apreciate your answer, Thank you so much.
Hey Guys I have a fred square tail 5’10 but would like to get a round tail for a little more hold whats the diff between semi 12 and rubble round. The out lines look similar but whats the diff in the rocker fin placement ect
thanks
Rich,
SP12 will have less volume (more foiled), and slightly less tail width.
Rubble has a kick out the last 4 inches as well.
If its really good waves go SP12, the rubble is more medium waves
So do they have the same rocker, it sounds like the rubble actually has more?
are the concave decks put in last? i.e. does it reduce the thickness compared to the normal deck or is this compensated for?
volume is reduced, but not displacement
It seems he’s riding 5 fin set ups on a good majority of his boards these days. I myself have personally never ridden a quad set up on a performance shorty. I’ve ridden them on a Fish, or groveler in mushier/fatter waves. However, I’ve never ridden a set up like that on a performance short board in steep/fast waves. Under which circumstances is it most useful to swap from thruster to quad on a performance board w/steeper waves? What might be the benefits/drawabacks?
can you custom order a 4″7 x ”17 3/4 x1 1/2 sperm whale?
Daniel, yes you can order pretty much anything custom!
Why you never show Taylor Knox quiver?
Why is kelly still riding fred rubbles?
I’d hazard a guess, because he likes them?
this question wasnt for you
hi what is the nose width on Kelly’s semi pro 5’9 18 1/4 21/4 ? Not the sp12 the regular semi pro?
Mal – 11 3/4 on his older ones
Just bought a stock 6′ 0″ Fred Rubble, and I have to say it seems kind of sluggish. I have only used for a couple of days and have been riding a 6′ 0″ Proton for a while, which I loved the responsiveness of, but don’t live in an area that produces the kind of waves the Proton needs on a regular basis.
Should I just be patient getting used to the Fred Rubble? Is there a board recommendation that retains the quick responsiveness and sensitivity of the Proton but works in more marginal surf?
Thanks
Andreas,
That should not be the case with the Rubble.
What fins are you using with the board? If you continue to have problems please e-mail us at [email protected] for quicker responses and we can dial in your board.
Eh, howzit?
I am 5’9 and 150lb and surf fairly good. Looking for a small wave board for Summer in France and I got the opportunity to buy a Pod or a Motorboat, both 5’4. What are the main differences between them and on what kind of shape / size waves would each one be good for? Which one is better for airs?
Tks and Aloha,
Gus,
The 54 x 19 1/4 x 2 1/4 Pod has 25.8L of volume and suited for an expert of 145 to 155 lbs.
The 54 x 19 1/4 x 2 1/4 MBoat is 23.5L and suited for an expert 130 to 140.
Looks like the Pod might work better for you, and with more rocker would be a good choice for airs.
Hi Guys thinking to custom order a rubble 5’9x 18 5/8x 2 5/16 eps/epoxy concove deck 5 fins the 21/4 is a 24.5L what the volumes of the one i want to custom order?
Mal,
Because the concave deck is hand-shaped in, we don’t calculate volumes for concave deck boards in the CAD program. Looks like someone may have already given the you volume for a board 1/16 thinner to compensate for the concave deck.
FRED 59 x 18 5/8 x 2 3/16 = 24.5L
Here is the non-concave volume and one 1/16 under if you want to follow the same convention.
FRED 59 x 18 5/8 x 2 1/4 25.2L
FRED 59 x 18 5/8 x 2 5/16 = 25.9L
Hey guys, what would be the better all round tail for a sp12.. squash or rounded pin?
adam..
Salut CI
I’ve be surfing for more than 20 years so I’m an experienced surfer. I weight 176 lbs and I’m 6 ’3′â€. I live in the Caribbean so surf mainly reefs and point breaks. Sometimes it’s double over head, but mostly it’s waist high. First I got the dumpster 5.8 X19 1/4 X2/3/8 (best board ever!) so then I got the neck beard in the same dimensions. What dim’s should I take for a Fred Rubble? Also, could you recommend any other boards?
Thanks
Hi just saw a brand new double helix proton 6’1 on sale can you tell me what’s the volume for it 6’1×18 5/8×2 3/8 and what are the advantage of the double helix? Lighter? better flex? Thanks
Is it still possible to oder your Retro Quad model? I had one in 2008 and it was one of my ALL time favorites templates but I don’t see it anymore on your website OR stocklist, thanks.
Michael
Michael,
Yes it is possible to essentially order anything. That one may take a couple weeks longer than a standard model.
You should e-mail [email protected] or call 877-surf-1-CI to get production times and quote.
Hey CI,
What would the volume be in a 6’0″ x 19″ x 2 7/17 and 6’0″ x 19″ x 2 1/2 SP12?
You think these dims would work? I’m 5’10″ 188lb getting more advanced.
Is it possible to order custom boards direct?
Eric,
SP12 6.0 19.0 2.4375 – 28.4L
SP12 6.0 19.0 2.5 – 29.1L
You would need to order custom boards through your local dealer, or you can order direct online / phone through many of our accounts.
At 188 you are going to want to keep your volume right around 30L for intermediate 28L would work for advanced.
And the DFR? What are the volumes in a
6.0 19.0 2.38
6.0 19.0 2.44
6.0 19.0 2.5
Thanks
Eric
Hey.
I am 160lbs and 5’10 looking for a SP12. What dimensions would you guys recommend for me?
Thanks
Hey CIS

I weight 160 pound, surf intermediate and am 5’11.
I was thinking baout a SP12 but not sure what size to get as I realy want something at least 6’1 for Indo 3-7ft.
Thanks
James
Hi Can you tell me the nose and tail width of a fred rubble round tail 5’11 – 18 7/8 – 2 5/16?
Thanks
What are the different tails and what do they do? For example if I where to get a swallow tail DFR over a squash DFR what would the difference be?
I am planning on getting a DFR for bellow average surf ( never really gets over head-and-a-half for me ). I am in need of a normal shortboardy type board and was wondering if this is the best choice. If so please could you recommend what size and what tail to order. I am 4’11″ ( expert ) and weigh 90lbs.
Thanks
Hey Channel islands!
Im about 5’9 and way 140 all together in my suit (expert) and i really need some help finding dimensions? I am looking for just a normal short board for like nipple high to little pretty big. I kinda want a rounded pin though. Like kellys boards up there!
Thanks!!!
Jess have you tried this page?

Hi, what is the tail width on Kelly’s semi pro 5’9 18 1/4 21/4 please? and on the rubble? thanks
14.35†on SP12
14.33″ on Rubble
how and can you put fcs plugs, not fusions, in a eps epoxy board?
FCS does not recommend using the X2 (plugs) in EPS due to strength issues with industry standard installation practices. However when properly installed the X2 is fine for Epoxy as we install them in Kelly’s, just make sure you use an extremely good glasser if you are not getting a CI.
Hello CI. I am looking into buying a FR and have been riding stock 5’6 x 19.25 x 2.25 Neckbeard. I consider myself intermediate surfer, spend most of my time on the south shore of Oahu. I am 5.9 avg weight: 160-170. What dims do you recommend? Also, will the board be a headache deciding what board to take out between the FR and NB being any similar with small surf? Also, after buying the FR would it be a better quiver having a sperm whale and FR, or a NB and FR? if I had to go with only 2 quiver? Aloha.
Hey Doug,
This page on our site can help http://cisurfboards.com/suggested_boards.php
As you can see you are in-line with our recommendation for the Neck Beard. The Fred can be used as an all-around shortboard, while the Neckbeard and SWhale have too much width in powerful surf. So the FR and NB is a more versatile quiver.
Based on your NB choice and surfing no wetsuit you will want to keep your Fred at around 27L or less.
Consider a 510 x 18 7/8 x 2 1/4 25.9L to start.
Cheers CI

Hey CI,
Could you please tell me what dimensions for a Rubble, DFR, Motor Boat Too, and Neck Beard? I am 4’11 and weigh 90 lbs ( expert ).
Thank you so much
And volumes, nose and tail widths too please.
Hi CI,
I like the og Semi Pro design…In Kelly’s video @ Ricon, he mentions that the board has alot of Concave and Rocker…how deep does the concave actually get? and how much rocker are we looking at? Thanks
Hi, I am interested in ordering a quad retro, but with XTR foam. What is the pricing for that kind of order?
Thanks
