Nat Young Wins Virginia Beach 2011 Vans Pro Junior

/ Nat Young

Nat Young

Victorious today was Nat Young (Santa Cruz, CA), 20, who took out the final stop on the ASP North America Pro Junior Series, the Vans Pro Junior.

While the men’s ASP 4-Star and ASP Pro Junior events were expected to run over the weekend, Hurricane Irene’s current trajectory is estimated to touch down in Virginia Beach overnight, forcing a mandatory early finish today in order to complete this year’s contest.

Nat Young looked extremely comfortable on the sloping righthand faces at 1st Street Jetty, which looked similar to his home-break in Santa Cruz, California. The goofy-footer built momentum throughout the Final, dropping a 7.17 to start and put on a backhand clinic when he smashed a series of furious backhand bashes and carves to scalp the highest single-wave score of the entire event a 9.87 to solidify the victory.

“It was good to get that wave at the beginning, to start off with that was good,” Young said. “I was out the back and that one came. It was just the perfect wave, it’s probably the best wave I’ve ever seen out here.”

Young, former ASP North America Pro Junior Series Champion, was competing in his last regional ASP Pro Junior event and was elated to clinch the Vans Pro Junior in his last event in the under-21 series.

“This is my last Junior event other than worlds (World Junior Tour) and it’s awesome to come out here with the win,” Young said. “It’s what I came here to do and I’m happy.”

Luke Davis (Capistrano Beach, CA), 18, who finished runner-up to Andino in the men’s main event, put on an amazing display of progressive maneuvers and stylish carving turns on the final day of competition. The San Clemente regular-footer was not only responsible for the highest single-wave score of men’s Vans Pro competition with a near-perfect 9.50 out of 10 in the Semifinals, but also secured his position for the 2011 ASP World Junior Tour with his equal 9th place finish in the Vans Pro Junior.

“I knew coming into this event that it was the last chance to qualify for worlds and I really wanted to make it because the competition is so tough in that division especially,” Davis said. “Unfortunately I lost in the Quarters (Pro Junior Quarterfinals), but I made the Final in the men’s so that was a plus.”
