Kelly Slater’s Quiver For The Rip Curl Pro Search San Francisco

October 31, 2011 / Kelly Slater, Quivers

For this event, Kelly had a couple remakes of the two epoxy boards he rode in the NYC, Trestles and all through Europe. Each had made the trip, but have been buckled several times and repaired. He made sure to have a few fresh ones waiting for him upon his arrival to the city by the bay. The conditions could range from smooth glassy three-footers to unruly monsters. With the rumor that they will be without jet skis assist, who knows — it could be a paddling contest and we may only see one or two waves ridden by each surfer . Anyway, that’s where a few fuller and longer step ups could come into play.

They are likely made to be the same, just backup as that’s a key size.

      Hello all,
I’m in the market, and I currently have a 6’0 x 18 3/4 x 2 5/16 squash tail. I love it, but need a back up as I’ll be surfing Nicaragua in May. I’m 5’10″ 145 lbs and intermediate skill level. What dims do you recommend?

        Rob,
        Nica is generally pretty good, so look at a 5’11 x 18 3/4 x 2 1/4 Semi Pro.
Its is 25.5L and rated for an expert at 170lbs.

    Hi Al,
I am having some of your boards from Jason Ribbink, they are great. The shapes and the glassing are very good. Congratulations for Kelly on his 11th World Title,
    he really deserved.

Hey I’m 5’7 135 lbs, intermediate (above avg) skill. Surf Socal mostly fair-good waves (OC to trestles). Looking for a new CI board (rode most recently JS Flyboy 5’11 x 18 1/8 x 2 1/8 previously), what volume and board (dims) would you guys recommend? Thanks! Go Ke11Y!

    (reply)
    • CI Surfboards11-04-11

Jay, You can go shorter and wider given your size and ability. The below dims will give you more drive and tighter arcs with the shorter rail.
Your JS is likely right around 23L.
      5’9″ x 18 1/4 or 18 3/8 x 2 1/8 Cheesestick (22.9-23.5L)
      5’8″ x 18 1/2 x 2 1/8 Rubble (23.4L)
      5’9″ x 18 5/8 x 2 3/16 Rubble (24.5L)

Greetings! Congrats to Slater and CI.
I am 6’3″ 195lbs. I want to go a little shorter and stubbier and I’d like to go with a CI. I have a buddy shaping me boards, trying to get results…I last rode a 6’5″ x 18 2/3 x 2 1/3 in head high, mushy beachbreak. It went “ok”. I feel (with limited knowledge of shaping) that it has a mite too much rocker for rippable waves. It may in fact be more of a step shape for a smaller human. Anyway, at my size, are there any recommendations you might make. Would like to try a template that I saw Kelly using at Trestles…I could of swore it was a squash. Thanks!

    (reply)
    • CI Surfboards11-04-11

      Marshall,
You are correct, long gone are the days of 6’5″ shortboards under 19″ wide.
Kelly has been riding the Rubble and Semi-Pro both, usually round tails.
      a 6’4″ x 19 7/8 x 2 5/8 Rubble would be an excellent fit for an intermediate surfer at 195 lbs. (34.6L)
      Advanced level would be a Rubble 6’2″ 19 5/8 x 2 1/2 (31.6L)

Hey guys, looking to get my yabba dabba doo on with a Rubble! I’m an intermediate level rider coming in at 6’3″ and 185lbs. been riding a 6’4″ Flyer in mostly weak FL surf. Thinking I can go a bit shorter and lose a little volume from the Flyer as I’m in better shape lately. What size and dims would you recommend, also is the 5-fin option viable on the squash tail or is that a Ke11y round tail thing? I like my quad fish on the right days but have never tried them on a performance board. On a side note…..I think Kelly should get another chair ride up the beach and be put on stage again with a functioning mic after his next heat win!

    • CI Surfboards11-04-11

      B-
Ya agreed Rip Curl can get the audio right on the 2nd pass hopefully.
5 fin option is available on any custom board. Only the Semi Pro and Neck Beard come off the rack as a 5-fin.
      An intermed level 185lb guy on the Rubble can go 6’2″ x 19 5/8 x 2 1/2 (31.6L)
Your 6’4″ Flyer is approx 35.5L
      You could also try the 6’3″ x 19 3/4 x 2 9/16 (33.0L)

Is a 6 ‘ 1″ semi pro , what thick ness and width is ok? I would like a Fort knox 6 ‘ 3 ” for biggger surf. What width and thickness ? thanks Anthony , Austraila.

      Anthony,
The CI crew in Mona Vale is incredible, you will get some great boards from them.
At you size go for a 18 7/8 to 19 1/8″ x 2 3/8 on both models. Obviously the wider if you prefer a little more volume.

    CI Crew,
I’m a novice/intermediate surfer living up in Oregon. In the winter I surf mostly beachbreak with a lot of current, long paddles and bump. My current step up board is a 6’6″ x 18.625″ roundpin with a healthy rocker and I just can’t seem to get into waves as early as I’d like to. When I do get one its hard to do much, but point it down the line. I want a shorter, looser board that will still get me in early. I’m 5’10″ and 165lbs and love my 5’10″ Dumpster Diver for head high and below surf. I’ve noticed a lot the team riders using the Fred Rubble as a step up and I had a chance to check out a 6’4″ round tail version in Encinitas last month. Would you recommend a thumbtail Fred 6’4″ or something else?

    (reply)
    • CI Surfboards11-06-11

      Gordon,
You are on the right track. Since that 5’10″ Dumpster is feeling good, make sure to keep that width over 19″ on that 6’4″ round tail Rubble. Team is loving these.
You could also try a 6’4″ RP Ft Knox
With all that rubber you are wearing don’t be afraid of some volume.

Wondering if I could go with a 6′-2″x20″x2-3/4″ and get at least 33.5-33.8L of volume. Not sure if the volume works out with these dimensions tho. Maybe you can help. Would be much appreciated. Thanks!

          • CI Surfboards11-11-11

            James,
Without waiting to CAD your dims up for volume here are two reference boards:
            Rubble 6’3″ x 19 3/4 x 2 9/16 = 33.0L
            Semi Pro 6’3″ x 19 5/8 x 2 1/2 = 31.2L
Going an inch shorter but 1/4″ wider and 1/4 “thicker than above will land you at 33.0L-34.0 L no problem.

my 5’10 dumpster is about smashed so im gonna switch it up to the rubble. if the 5’10 dumpster was my go to for all around surf, what would that translate to in the rubble?? im 6’3 185lb.

      Dylan,
Good to hear you are getting some miles on that Dumpster. Your 5’10″ would be about 31.9L
      Based off that you could surf a 6’2″ x 19 5/8 x 2 1/2 Rubble (31.6L)

What is the difference between the EPS foam with epoxy and the Tuflite Technology? Tuflite also has ULTRAFLX technology, do you guys provide that for your boards?

    Thanks

    (reply)
    • CI Surfboards11-07-11

      Hiro,
EPS+Epoxy is a traditional and fully custom hand-built construction here in Santa Barbara.
Tuflite, while also utilizing some hand construction, uses sandwich molded tech, available only in certain sizes and built in Thailand.
UltaFlex is currently under evaluation and is not offered yet.

    Hello,
I currently ride a biscuit 6’10x22x3 and a flyer 7’6×21.5×3. I am 6’5 235 lbs and an average surfer. Two questions:
    1) what would you recommend to fill the gap between the biscuit and the flyer for decent days in NY/NJ?
    2) Can you recommend something for middle of winter NY/NJ swells? With my size, a thick wetsuit and cold water I feel like I don’t have enough board to get in early on the larger hollow beach breaks around NY/NJ.
    Thanks in advance!

    (reply)
    • CI Surfboards11-14-11

      JM,
1 – Only a few choices that land b/t a Biscuit and a Flyer. A Pod or Gravy would be more performance than a Biscuit, order the same size as your Biscuit but they will be much more foiled.
2 – An M13 could work well on the bigger days as the have some concave to vee. Al rode long M13s at Sunset in Hawaii all the time. Another option would be a 7’2″ to 7’6″ Black Beauty. 21 x 3

What are the main differences between the Rubble and the Semipro? I head that the Semi pro was made off the Tangent with Proton rocker and bottom contour and that the Rubble was based off the Flyer with Proton bottom contours.

I have a K whip and a Proton that I absolutely love, with a Rookie on the way. I definitely like what I guess are considered “front footed” boards.

    (reply)
    • CI Surfboards11-14-11

      Mike,
The main difference is the Rubble will carry more volume at the same dimensions as it has a wider nose and tail at 12″ as well as a fuller rail.
The Semi Pro is not quite a curvy as the Proton, but does have the same deep single concave through the back 3rd of the board.
The Rubble is single to double concave with vee behind the trailing fin, so not a single concave like the Proton.
Let us know how your Rookie goes!

    6’2″ Dagger 2 5/8 x 19 5/8
    5’11″ Dumpster Diver Roundtail 2 3/4 x 20 1/5
Im trying to narrow my boards a bit-
-If I request a ‘team’ [pinched] rail can I get that, and can I request a specific shaper that shaped me my last gem from you guys?

You can get any rail you want, if you want to even take a template you can send us that.
You can request a shaper if you had him do some specific tweaks last time no prob.
I can run your specs with the CAD guy but here are the estimations based off our closest stock dims
      6’6″ Proton 19 1/2 x 2 5/8 = 34.3L at 1/4 narrower and pinched rail looking at approx 33.5L
      6’3″ FR = 33L approx
      6’2″ Dagger = 33.2L approx

    ;Hi,

I’m looking into getting a new CI board really soon. I’m a 5’7″ (70kg) intermediate surfer from Australia – I surf breaks around Bells on the west coast and Gunnamatta on the east coast (also Woolamai). I’m pretty keen to go for the Dumpster Diver, particularly for the small summer swells here. Any suggestion on what dimensions I should go for or if any other types of boards and their dimensions? Thanks heaps!!

    Hey guys,

I surf OB all year round here in SF and have a pretty big quiver but am finding myself riding my smaller boards more and more. My current favorite board is a 6’1 x 18 3/4 x 2 3/8 swallow tail quad made by Chili I love it, especially in head high to a foot or two overhead. I never thought it would be able to paddle me enough at the Beach, but so far it seems to. Granted I haven’t started wearing my heavy 5mil suit yet, so maybe this will change, I don’t know. What I need is a step up board. I have a 6’6 x 19 x 2.5″ roundpin, but lately it just feels to voluminous and tough to duckdive; also, it feels like I am standing too far out of the water and don’t have the ability to displace water like I would like on it. If I was going to get a board for 1.5x-2x overhead at the Beach, what would you suggest? I am 5’9, 175 pounds. The Rubble seems interesting since it seems to have hidden foam to paddle better, but I would love to hear what you thought. When it comes to rails, I really have little understanding about pulling them out, or “pinching” them, as I read in some comments above. Please advise if you can.

    Thank you kindly,
    AG

    (reply)
    • CI Surfboards11-15-11

      AG,
A pinched rail is where the shaper takes some extra passes to make the rail thinner, creating a more sensitive and responsive rail at the expense of volume and potentially forgiveness.
      If you like your 18 3/4, go 6’4″ 18 3/4 x 2 3/8 STEP-UP Rubble.
Similar to what Kelly rode up there. We will pull the tail to help the board settle when its pumping.
At your weight we should not need to pinch the rail at 2 3/8.

    hey guys,
Would you say that the Rubble suits the average surfer better?
Ride a bradley cb8 now at 6.4-19-2 3/8 thinking about the rubble at 6,2-19? something and 2 3/8 thick.just because i dont like thick boards.
And wil the board go in indo?
    thanks from holland

      Roel,
For sure the Rubble with its double concave is very forgiving. And your dims sound good.
The Rubble will work in Bali for sure especially head hi and smaller, but if it’s pumping 2x overhead you might want to also take a semi-pro.

    Hi CI Guys,

Thanks for this blog, it’s great to see so much insight. I am 6’2″ 205lb and I have a 6’2 19.5 by 2.5 flyer. It works really well but washes out in steeper waves. Would the rubble be a good addition to the quiver for that? What size would you say, I am an average surfer. Thanks!

    Jon

      Jon,

Order it the same size as your Flyer, the foiled extremties on the Rubble will make it more positive in steeper waves.

Is the wide point of semipro in front or behind center? Board description on your site says 2 inch behind center, but I remember Kelly talking about how wide point was forward. Which is it?

    (reply)

      Behind.
Kelly was referring to when he designed it he was trying to move wide point forward.

“I took the template off my 6’1 Tangent model that I’ve been riding for the last couple years,” said Kelly Slater. “Yet I still wanted a board that was shorter, so I had to take length of the nose and not width out of the center. I kept the wide point a little further forward of center (about two inches to be exact) so it still rides like a longer board. This is important because I feel the outline is really crucial in allowing the board to feel loose and maintain drive.”

Semi Pro is on the flat side, is 1 7/8″ to 2″ tail, 4″ to 4 1/2″ nose.
The patches can vary from Carbon veil, 4oz fiberglass, or proto Kevlars and other weaves. Usually placed under the back foot to prevent crushing.

    Hey,

I am interested in the Fred Rubble, Cheesestick, or the Neckbeard but I have no clue which board and what dims would suit me more for my goals and the waves I surf day-to-day. Lately, I have been riding either boards I have shaped or some used boards trying to figure out what kind of boards I like. What I have come up with is that I like full volume boards with sharp rails that are shaped similarly to my body shape. I am 5’9″ 170-175 so I like to ride the shorter wider boards. I am 24 years old and have roughly 6 years experience try to surf everyday (sometimes more) in Santa Cruz, CA. I tend to enjoy faster high performance waves (like most, i guess). Just looking for some input and ideas on what direction to go in.

    Thanks everyone,

      Rich,
If you like full volume, you can drop the stock Cheese Stick, of course you can always order it fuller. Best for beach breaks and top to bottom surfing.
The Rubble is medium volume, great in all conidtions
Short and high volume the Neckbeard would fit the bill. You can ride this one the shortest and low rocker will be fast. 5’6″ or 5’7″

      Lionel,
      A 5’10″ 18 1/2 x 2 1/4 Semi Pro is 24.8L at 152lbs we recommend 23L to 25L for expert to intermediate respectively.
Generally speaking a thruster will feel more drivey and pivoty while the quad will feel faster. All five fins would not be used unless you utilized a small nub fin like Kelly has been recently.

I am also looking at a step up proton (or rounded pin Fred Rubble step up what is the difference?) 6’6 what dimension would you recommend? Thanks Ant

    (reply)

      Ant,
      A 30L semi Pro would be 6’2″ to 6’4 x 19 1/4 x 2 7/16 (29.5L to 30.3L respectively)
At your height try for the 6’2″.
At 6’6″ stay with 19″ to 19 1/4″ wide and same thickness. Rubble with single to double concabe will be a little more forgiving than the Proton, but the Proton more sensitive and work better when on rail.

I’m well traveled and surf well for my age. I’m looking to size 2 boards. A work horse board for head and a 1/2 under, and a Step up for head high and over reefs. Currently I still ride my 7th MX 6’6″, 2-3/8 (and love it) as my work horse. Step ups, I’ve had many, but feel semi gun are limiting where I want to be on the wave. A dinosaur maybe but Not ready to through in the towel.
    Thanks for your help,
    Michael.

    • CI Surfboards11-24-11

      Michael,
The M-X was a workhorse for many for years. Planshapes have become shorter and wider since the MX. It sounds like you spend your sessions in primarily good waves. Given you like the flat entry and the forgiving nature of the MX, you could upgrade your workhorse to a 6’4 x 19 1/4 x 2 7/16 (31L) Rookie or a 6’4 x 19 1/4 x 2 7/16 (30.3L) Semi Pro.
Stay away from a proper Semi Gun and go for a Step-up. The K-Step at 6’6″ to 6’10″ by 19 1/4 x 2 7/16 should fit the bill.

It is common knowledge that EPS is more buoyant (more on top of the water) than Poly so i wonder why Slater does not go thinner with his EPS 5’9s?

Also, if you wanted to match the buoyancy of a Poly board that is 2 1/8 thick to an EPS, what would be the thickness of the EPS?

    (reply)
    • CI Surfboards11-24-11

      David,
Can of worms here as everyone has different theories on the bouyancy of EPS vs PU.
Perhaps Kelly’s boards are so low volume (21-22L) to begin with going 1/16 thinner would not make much difference?
We can ask him and let you know

      (reply)
      • David11-25-11

        That would be awesome!
I wonder if Al has an opinion on the subject.
Every EPS that i have tried that is the same thickness as what I ride in PU feels too thick because it sits higher in the water.

    Greetings:

I need some advice regarding suitable volume for my new shortboard. Here are the stats –

    5’7″
    175 lbs.
    Advanced surfer (power surfing)

Currently riding an SP Black Beauty, 6′, 18 3/8, 2 1/4″ which works well when the surf is very hollow but would like more ease when paddling to catch a wave (easier entry, not a late/critical takeoff). Very fast and loose in the pocket but looses drive in flat sections fast.

My step up board is a CI Taylor Knox 6’4″, 19″ 2 3/8″. Lots of ease in paddling and wave catching + super fast, responsiv e board.

Looking to purchase a small wave board with a 5 fin setup (the ones mentioned are 3 fin setups). What would you recommend?

      If small wave you mean under head hi, then go with a 5 fin neckbeard. 5’6 x 19 ¼ x 2 ¼ or 5’7 x 19 ½ x 2 5/16.
That should compliment your other 2 board nicely.

I also wanted a board that worked as well as the flyer on flat faced walls but that can handle a tight bottom turn. I was thinking about ordering a fred rubble 5.’11′, 18 3/8, 2 3/16 thumb tail…what do you think?’ I am 1.77 m tall and I weigh around 65 kgs and I ve been surfing in portugal for 25 years…

      Nuno,
You know your boards, the round tail on the Rubble is going to handle juice better than the Flyer but still be able to grovel when needed.
Given your height and weight though you can stay wth the 5’10″ and go 5’10 x 18 7/8 x 2 1/4 or even 5’9 x 18 5/8 x 2 3/16, you want to keep the rail short for those tight bottom turns.

I’m looking for 3 kinds of boards as One for small wave Knee to Head in beach-breaks and One for Waist to over-head in beach-breaks & point-breaks (stones) and the last one is for shoulder to double-over head in reef-breaks. I’m thinking to get 1 – the motor boat for small wave, 2 – Fred-Rubble as all-round board & 3 – Semi-Pro or Rookie for Solid-wave. Can you advise what size I should order?!… I think I’m between Intermediate and advance, but I like to make more vertical & Air. I’m riding D.D (5.7 x 19 1/2 x 2 5/16) and Proton (6.0 x 18 1/2 x 2/ 1/4). D.D is working well, but I feel Proton is a bit too long. My size is 173cm x 69kg. Thx in advance.

      TakaC,
At your ability and weight, you can ride your boards a little smaller.
      Try the Motorboat 5’6 x 19 ¼ x 2 ¼. The Rubble at 5’9 x 18 5/8 x 2 3/16 and a round tail Rookie 5’11 x 18 1/2 x 2 1/8
      or Semi Pro at 5’11 x 18 3/4 x 2 1/4

    Hey Al,

I am 14 and I am about to get some boards through my local surf shop in Hanalei Kauai and I am growing fast how long do you think these boards might take. Also what would be the best way to order boards. I wish I could go off the stock list but the boards are all to big.

    Thanks

      Lucas,
Order from your local shop. If you want current models, without airbrush, then these should be built in under 4 weeks.

    Hello,
I am an intermediate/advanced surfer looking to get a Semi-pro. I am 5’11″ and 175 Lbs. I live in ventura and I surf a lot of beachbreak and if i surf a point it is usually somewhere punchy. My favorite board i have right now is a SUPER toy custom order (5’10.5″ , 18 3/4, 2 1/4) with carbon fiber in the tail. it works well for small days and beach break up to a little overhead. What dimensions should i order for a Semi-Pro?

    • CI Surfboards12-29-11

Eli sounds like you ride low volume (expert level) for your weight.
      We suggest 6’0 x 18 7/8 x 2 5/16 (advanced) but if you want to keep it like your Super then go 5’11 x 18 3/4 x 2 1/4

    Hi
I’m 6’0, 175 lb, intermediate to advanced surfer & I’m thinking of the following boards
Could you let me know the volumes of these boards & tell me if they look about right for me?
    Semi Pro – 6’1, 19 1/8, 2 3/8
    Fred Rubble – 6’0, 18 7/8, 2 3/8
    Dumpster Diver – 5’9, 19 3/4, 2 3/8
    Pod – 5’8, 20, 2 3/8
Can Pukas in Donostia do all those boards?
    Thanks heaps
    Barrels

    • CI Surfboards12-29-11

Ben – based on your weight we call out 26L on hi performance to 29L on grovellers at expert level.
      SP- 28.1L
      FR- 27.5
      DD- 30L
      Pod – 29.3L
Yes olatu/pukas is trained on all these. They looks like they could all fit within the range at intermed to advanced. The Rubble maybe go 19 1/8.

    Hey Al,

I know I am going to get a 5’2″ x 17 3/8 x 2 Fred Rubble for my beach break board but I really like the single to double concave on the bottom of my boards and I was wondering what shortboard is good in hollow good waves that has a single to double bottom. I am 5’3″ and around 98 lbs and an advanced surfer (blowtails, barrels, turns and all).

    Thanks so much

    Lucas

      Lucas,
The Rubble does have single to a slight double concave to vee in it already.
As most of the ASP tour had switched to all single concave over the last few years, not many newer models have double concave in them. However you could also choose from the Ft Knox or Dagger a those do have double.

    Hi CI,

I’m 6’1, 190lbs, intermediate/advanced surfer. I’m trying to once and for all get the board that would be just the right volume and height for me and I’m hoping you can help. Here is a list of boards that I’ve had in the past and their issues:

6’1 x 19 1/4 x 2 3/8 Flyer – I really liked this board when I actually got on the wave but the I felt like it needed more volume. Paddling it into the wave wasn’t the easiest.
6’2 x 19 1/8 x 2 1/2 MBM – This board didn’t feel like it had enough volume or the volume I wanted for paddling
6’2 x 19 1/4 x 2 1/2 Flyer – I really liked this board and I feel like this has been the best fit for volume so far. Maybe a tad too much volume though.
    6’1 1/2 x 19 1/2 x 2 1/2 Tangent – I like this board but it feels like there’s a tad too little volume.

I’m looking at the Fred Rubble but I think the 6’1 stock dims might be too small and the 6’2 stock dims might be too big. I know I sound like goldilocks here but if you could help me find the best board (or boards) based on the information I provided, I’d be happy to go out and purchase them right now. This is for an all around board and point breaks.

Also, could you list out the volumes of the boards I mentioned above (ex. 31.9L) and the volumes of the boards you suggest too?

    Thanks!
    James

    (reply)
    • CI Surfboards01-05-12

      James,
      We ran the volumes
      6’1 x 19 1/4 x 2 3/8 Flyer – 30.2L
      6’2 x 19 1/8 x 2 1/2 MBM – 29.8L
      6’2 x 19 1/4 x 2 1/2 Flyer – 32.0L
      6’1 1/2 x 19 1/2 x 2 1/2 Tangent – 30.6L
Looks like you can shoot for the upper 31L and you might be juuust right.
      6’2 x 19 5/8 x 2 1/2 Rubble is 31.6L
      6’1 x 19 3/8 x 2 7/16 Rubble is 30.1L

          James a 6’4 x 19 1/4 x 2 7/16 Rookie is 31L
          6’5 x 19 1/2 x 2 ½ Semi Pro is 31.9L
          6’3 x 19 5/8 x 2 1/2 Semi Pro is 31.2L

    Hey C.I.

First wanna say thanks for answering alll these questions, pretty much the only surf forum/website I’ve seen do this, so Kudos to ya’ll.

So my question is, I am looking to get a Rubble. I am 6’2″ and 190-195 lbs. I consider myself advanced/expert surfer (cutbacks, throw fins, hacks, ocasional air) and mainly surf Cali beach break, sometimes point.

I already have a Semi-Pro 6’2″ x 19 1/4 x 2 7/16. Would getting a 6’2″ Rubble be overkill? I normally never go under 2 1/2 for thickness, but decided to take a chance with the Semi-Pro and love it. Works great even in mushy waste to chest high beach break. I have a few other grovelers that I use on occasion, but want something that could be a little bit more when its punchy.

So basically wondering if the FR in the same height as my SP would be worth it, or if I should try some other dimensions.
    Mahalos for your help!

    (reply)
    • CI Surfboards01-05-12

Young – thanks for the props. We realize getting the right board is important, and even small changes in dimensions can make a big difference.
      Your SP 6’2″ x 19 1/4 x 2 7/16 is 29.5L.
      A stock Rubble 6’2 x 19 5/8 x 2 1/2 will be 31.6L and rated for an expert at 200lbs.
This will make a big difference in paddle and on rail.
Normally you would use the Rubble as more of a groveller than the Semi Pro. You could however order the FR at 19 1/4 and put a round tail (like Kelly does) on it for good waves. then you get good paddling into the chunky stuff and that versatile FR performance

    Hey Al,

I was looking at the Fort Knox for my good wave board what about the rookie or the remix what kind of bottom is on those boards

    (reply)
    • CI Surfboards01-05-12

      Lucas,

The Ft Knox is very popular for good waves, make sure to get a round tail. It has light single to DEEP double concave.
Rookie and ReMix are both single concave excellent shortboards boards which like to be surfed more on rail than a double concave board. The team rode some Rookie Step-Ups with mixed results when they got over 6’4″. Go with the Ft. Knox if its for big waves.

    Hey Al

I was thinking fort knox for my good wave board but i am only 95 lbs. I was checking out bethany and alanas boards and some of the remixs and rookie had doubles in them? Can you get a single to double on a custom board like a rookie or do you just have to go with the single like it is on all boards?

    (reply)
    • CI Surfboards01-06-12

Lucas – you can get double concave like you saw in Alana and Bethany’s boards, just needs to be a custom order specifying the double to be hand shaped in.

    Hey Al

That for the advice about the remix. How do you think the proton with a double concave and a round pin will work for a good hollow wave board. Everyone tells me that is the board for good waves so should I go with the remix or the proton? Let me know what you think, thanks!

    (reply)
    • CI Surfboards01-10-12

Lucas – the Proton comes standard with the single concave, we can put double in it if you like, but hard to say 100% if that will suit your personal tastes. The Proton works best for expert surfers, and the ReMix works for a wide variety of all level surfers.

    Hey Guys,

Looking at getting into the whole shorter wider thing for my daily driver anything from chest to head/half high . I’m 6″3/1/2 and 190lbs 38yo average plus ability . I like a little more volume for paddling as I surf allot but the back isn’t what it used to be . Thinking along the lines of RUBBLE or DAGGER squash or round tail . What dims would you be suggesting and what would be the nose and Tail dims at 12″ also please ??? Thanks in advance Guys !

    • CI Surfboards01-18-12

      Darren
Volume for your size on a Dagger and Fred would be right arounf 30L to 32L these are on the upper end to give some paddle power
You could ride a 3 6’3″ in either
      Dagger 6’3″ 19 5/8 x 2 3/8 is 32L Approx 11 7/8 N and 14 1/4 T
      Rubble 6’3″ x 19 5/8 x 2 9/16 is 32.4L Approx 12″N and 14 3/4 T

Anywhere from 2″ to 4″ longer, generally keep your same width and thickness of your daily driver if you really like that board.

    If I went for a Semi Pro or a Fred Rubble with the same dimensions. 6′ 1″ x 19 1/8″ x 2 3/8″ both as a round tail.
    What would be the difference?
I know the Rubble has a lower entry rocker but what will be the effect on how it rides?
And what would be the volumes of the 2 boards?
    Thanks heaps

      Barrels –
The SP will be slightly less volume as the rails are thinned. The Rubble also has a little more kick in the tail.
29L on the Fred and feel quite loose.
About 28.5L on the SP and havel a little more drive.

Hey guys! Just wanted to start it off by saying that this is amazing how much help you give with this blog. Not too many (if any) companies that I know of do anything like this. Anyways, I’m looking to get a “good wave board”. I surf San Diego often and have a biscuit for the smaller stuff. Is there a board that you’d recommend that would be a 5′- 3′ish overhead waves? I am 5’7 155 lbs and an intermediate surfer. I have been pointed in the direction of the 5’9 x 18 1/4″ x 2 1/4″ semi pro, but was skeptical in how it’d handle in the bigger waves. Would maybe a 6’0 rookie or something of that nature be a better choice? Any info/advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

    • CI Surfboards01-24-12

      Joe
Here to help when we can! The SP in a round tail would generally be a better selection that the Rookie, unless you customed the Rookie in to a step up.
Kelly rode the SP in all kinds of barrels so will handle well, just need to consider how much volume you want for ease of paddling.
That 5’9″ at 24L is going to be for an expert at 155 lbs, so consider looking at a 5’10″.

I just recently bought a stock 6’1 Fred Rubble off the rack. It paddles great and is easy to surf butt feels a like a littel too much volume for me. Im 6’1 and 165lbs, been surfing for 10 years and feel like Im slightly above average skill level. What would my ideal volume be for a my boards and would you recomend me surfing a smaller Fred?
    thanks

    (reply)
    • CI Surfboards01-24-12

Shannon, our calcs call out a stock volume of 24.5L for an expert at 165lbs and 25.9L for an intermediate.
That stock 6’1″ you have is 30.1L and would be for an expert at 190lbs or an intermediate at 180 to 185 lbs.
Deal is you are tall and light, our stock dims would be 5’10″ 18 7/8 x 2 1/4 but you might want to go longer to make up for your height.

    Salut CI
I’ve be surfing for more than 20 years so I’m an experienced surfer. I weight 176 lbs and I’m 6 ’3′”. I live in the Caribbean so surf mainly reefs and point breaks. Sometimes it’s double over head, but mostly it’s waist high. First I got the dumpster 5.8 X19 1/4 X2/3/8 (best board ever!) so then I got the neck beard in the same dimensions. My questions: What’ s the volume of the dumpster and neck beard and what dim’s should I take for a Fred Rubble? Also, could you recommend any other boards?
