Kelly Slater’s Quiver for Tahiti 2011
CONTEST UPDATE:
(10am PST, August 29, 2011) Kelly’s been riding board number five below, a 5’11″ x 18 3/8″ x 2 1/4″ Semi Pro in the challenging Tahiti conditions. Look for Kelly in heat two of the quarterfinals today!
This year Kelly will be experimenting with quite a few Fred Rubble step ups. The fullness in the nose and slightly wider forward entry seem to get him over the top and into waves quicker which can be a necessity in Tahiti . The increased tail rocker that this model offers gives him more freedom in the pocket. When ordered at his normal shortboard dims and slightly longer as a step up, seem to be just what the doctor ordered for this event. Kelly rode one several weeks ago free surfing Restaurants, Fiji. (Video note: on a 5’9″ x 18¼” x 2¼” rounded pin Fred Rubble)
He was amazed with how free it felt off the top and how well it rode the barrel. Kelly may also choose to ride his trusty Semi Pros, and still has a few back ups on the island which he knows work well. So that offers him another option as well. We can’t forget to mention his 5’11″ Deep Six model, after winning Pipe on this board, it has been an integral part of his quiver for juicy hollow waves. Look for late drops straight into the pit with an incredible amount of speed and control through those almost unmake-able sections. This is the board that may nail him a few perfect tens if it’s pumping. He would ride this board when most guys choose to ride a 6’6″ or 6’8″, as the template on the back half is just that!
On another note, Kelly has always said that quads offered up unparalleled amounts of speed, especially in critical hollow waves. All his boards are set up as FCS five fin options. After a win at the US Open on a quad squash tail, there’s a good chance he’ll ride a quad in some of his heats!
Left to Right:
All 5 fin FCS and round pin tails

Is he bringing a gun or a tow board?
Yeh i agree
Whats with all the fred rubbles? an only the one semi pro….. and 6’3 wow pretty big for kelly these days eh?
ha. things have changed a bit. Any ideas on the history of this board? I think he had these in 92′. First world title year? http://t.co/6ISKz7T
Chris, the closest records we have here are of the “M5X” series that date 1994 serial 40375.
This one is an M3A, and M5A was between them.
So yes ’92 or ’93 would be accurate
Thanks for the info. There are quite a few more of your boards in the collection that I’m shooting. It would be killer to snag some details on them as they get shot. this one says 08 Chopes on the bottom.

Very cool studio shots of those boards Chris…
Shaping since 1971, never seen something more “sexy” than a simple round (¿ pin?) quad,. Clear, always
shapig since 1971, never seen something more beautiful than a simple, clear, round quad
What are my options to get a hold on a CI if I live in Luxembourg… Can I Order Online and get delivered in a Store close by ?
Please let me know via email…. I also would like to get a recommendation on the size. I am 1.68 mts and 67Kilos, my level of surfing is intermediate.
Been always riding on a 6’2″ but I am thinking on going smaller now… Board will be used in my Home Country, El Salvador, Central America, surf is pretty consistent
with 6 feet waves on average… but could get real big.

This link will have dealers in your area, please let us know if you find what you need. ([email protected])
You can also e-mail us for more info.
The dealer can see what our factory in Hossegor has in stock, as well as build customs if needed.
At 5’6″ and 148 you should be looking a 5’10″ to 6’0″, Semi-Pro, Rookie or Cheese Stick given the conditions you described.
Hi, can you recommend a board for me also? I am 6’0 and 72kgs and an average surfer. I live in Sydney, surfing mainly beach breaks and want a board for when it’s between 3′ – 6′. I am currently riding a 6’0 x 19,1/4 x 2,3/8 psyllakis flyfish for the smaller days and looking for something when it’s gets a little bigger than 3′
Above 3′ beachbreak you could ride a high performance shortboard like the Cheesestick, Rookie, or Semi Pro.
Given your Fish is 6’0″ (a little bigger than normal) and you are intermediate, ride stock dims about 6’3″
Hi, I’m on the gold coast Australia and have been looking for a quad which has good performance in 2- 5′ surf with a little volume for smaller days on the points here. There is a CI model here labelled as a slater model it’s a quad/thruster setup. I usually ride a 6’4 MBM model and a 5’11 fishcuit. Would I be getting a similar total volume as the 5’11 fishcuit in a 6’2 or 6’3 slater model?
Chris,
Your 5’11″ Fishcuit has about 40L of volume, a Semi Pro at 6’3″ would have about 29L.
This is far less.
You would see far difference performance.
hi,
beautiffull quiver, have no doubt it helped him win, Congrats!
I was wondering, since it caught my eye straight away the nº6 board is different from the others, more “bulky” towards the nose, so i tried to find out more about the “deep six” but can’t really find anything on the site, was that an experiment or something, did he use it, how did it go, any feed back ? it looks a lot like a classic gun, i would never guess it’s a 5’11”, i really like it.
Pete,
Kelly first used the Deep 6 to win the Pipe Masters in 2008 in solid size waves. Designed to shorten the rail line to be responsive in the barrel but the area forward gives it some paddling. The narrow tail offers a solid positive feel in barrels. Custom order only, for advanced surfers.

Thank you so much for the info and the link, I am 6′ 4” in height, about 75 Kg, and have been surfing for about 15years now, not so much the last 5 unfortunately, and until the recent Fish/Retro shape revolution everyone around since the 90 ‘s wanted to shape and surf the smallest, narrowest, thinnest, “rockest” thing, that never worked very well for me as you can imagine… not only for paddling and catching waves, but also because I naturally tend to place the front foot more forwards than average in smaller boards. I recently surfed a seven footer, and remember thinking that if I could use that pintail and cut or “shape-off” a different nose I would get the board i wanted for tube ridding, so you can imagine how blown away i was when i read the article, everything made sense, even the fact that it was just that idea and pure messing around with cad at first (wich is my working tool – AutoCad). I would love to have a 6′ 6” “deep-six” no matter what everyone else thinks, if i ever be able to afford it, i will definetly place an order! Isn’t it incredible that what looks weird or exotic for some, looks just right for others? The experience never stops, so never stop experimenting… Cheers!
Hi
I’m looking for some recommendation on boards too. I’m 6 and 85kg (many years dry unfortunately…). What’s your choice for beach breaks on Galician coast for usually chest to head high waves? Average surfer.
Thanks!!
Hey Alex,
at 187 lbs you have some options such as a 5’10″ Pod (32L), 6’1″ Dagger (31L) and 6’1″ Rubble (30L)
kellys gone back to super low volume
hi im 5 foot and 95 pounds i need a board for small and choopy waves what do u think
a 5’2″ Rubble 17 3/4 x 2
Hey,
Im looking for some recommendation too. I’ve been surfing for a while with a mali . But now i want to buy a shortboard (channel island ofcourse) . I’m 1.75m and 64kg.. I live in europe (holland) so the most of the time i surf here ,also south france and spain (viscay). so wich board do you recommend me and what size?
Thanks!!
I live in Oahu and my everyday boards is a 5’8×17 1/8×1 7/8 proton and i ride it all the way up to a couple feet overhead but when it does get bigger than 3ft it feels like i need more foam . I’m 5’7 and currently weight 132lbs (pretty dry at the moment) should i try to go a little thicker on my next one? Im thinking of gettin a rubble next time maybe 2 one regular one step up. any suggestions on dimensions? th
Pablo,
The regular one could replace your Proton which is just under 21L. Low volume for your weight.
Recommend a 5’6″ 18 1/4 x 2 1/16 at 21.7L. Everyday board
Step up go 5’11 x 18 1/4 x 2 1/16
Hi, I’m 5’9 and 177 pounds, I’m think to get 5’8 motorboat for some sloppy wave. Is that a right motorboat size for me??
Thank you
A 5’8″ Motorboat would work for an expert surfer at 185 pounds.
If you are advanced/intermediate then yes.
Could you please list the volumes of the boards that Kelly took? Mostly interested in 6’3 and 6’1 rubble stepups and the deep 6. Thanks!
woohhh sick quiver! would be a dream of mine to have one of those boards hah
Hi
I am wondering if you could suggest what size Fred Rubble I should order. I am 6ft tall and weigh 100kg plus I am 42 years old and I like a bit of paddler power. I surf at least once a week and usually surf beach and point breaks in AUS. Whats the main difference between the rounded pin and the rounded square tail?
Thanks
Warren, at your size and wanting some float, go 6’6 x 20 1/4 x 2 3/4 (37.8L) to 6’8 x 20 1/2 x 2 3/4 (39.3L).
The round pin would have less surface area and lift than the squash. So the squash would grovel better while the RP would hold and bite in barrels better.
Hi! My name is Guido from Perú 35 years old. I’m 5’7 and 143 pounds. I want to order a CI surfboard in the local store but i need help to choose the correct one. What model CI surfboard can you recommend me to ride point breaks 7 to 9 feet and what volume can work best for me?
Another question: Short board and step up have different volumes for the same person?
Thanks!
Guido,
7 to 9 feet? So you mean just overhead to about double overhead? You definitely want a step -up. Volumes are less important for step ups, as usually the waves are so good you want a board you can paddle into bigger waves and still maintain manueverability. If you have a magic shortboard, take the width, add maybe 1/8 thickness, go up 2″ to 6″ in length and order a round pin. At advanced level you would ride a shortboard at about 5’9 x 18 1/4 x 2 1/8. Your Step up could be anywhere from 5’11″ to 6’2″ 18 1/4 x 2 1/4. If you are intermediate go shortboard 5’10″ 18 1/2 x 2 1/4 and step-up 6’2″ 18 1/2 x 2 5/16
Hi I am looking for a performace board for waves from 3 to 6 feet. At the moment I am riding a 6’3” x 18 3/4 2 x 3/8 SX2 (Simon Anderson) and I also ride a 5’6” biscuit in very small days. I would like something with a more perfomance, shorter and less volume than the SX2 and was very facinated by the SP 12. I am not sure what measure would fit me best. I am an average surfer I am 5’7” and 160 pounds usually surf in Portugal or Bali, what measure would you suggest? According to the board selector at your website I should get a SP12 from 5’11” to 6’1”. Is there so much difference between this measure? Which one would you suggest?
Thanks!
Luca,
As you are looking for a shortboard and for good waves (Bali Portugal), go 5’11″ 18 3/4 x 2/4 on the SP12 for your weight.
I would like to order a deep6 but I’m trying to find some information on how to properly size the board. can you help me with that. I’m 180 and I consider myself to be an advanced surfer.
