MTF altered might go pretty well if backdoor gets squirrely. Dane’s surfing in France a couple years back on that thing was unbelievable, good to see Slater trying out yet another school of thought regarding alternative shapes for barrel riding. Can’t wait!

Hey CI guy, thanks for the info. Please explain the bottom contours of the deep six. Also, is the fin placement changed as a result of the shorter rail line, or is it similar to a typical step-up/pin tail board.

      (reply)
      • CI Surfboards01-11-12

There are two versions that Kelly uses, all light single concave to flat exit is the most common, and then there is a version with some slight double between the fins.
Fins are set like you would a 7’0″ gun, meaning they are moved forward to 12″ and 3.5″

Yes, I am also pumped to see if Slate uses the MTF. Interesting Sleeve as well. Kinda suprised to not see a Fred Rubble in his quiver. Also, whats the added benefit to the channels on the sleeve?

By the way, looks like the Deep six can’t hold after that big wipe out, the board hit the reef and snap the tip of the tail away, also kelly went out with some reef scratchs.

Seriously – the guys on more traditional, longer boards looked like they had more flow out there today – John John went richter and much respect to Evan Valiere as well. Was incredible to watch that level of Pipe mastery.

      Jason,
I do not believe we are making the round tail 5 fin option for the racks Australia.
But the guys in Mona Vale can make you a custom quickly.
      Expert dims for you would be 5’6 x 18 ¼ x 2 1/16 (21.7L)

I just ordered a 6’4 Semi Pro with a rounded pin. Its a step up from my 6’1 Rooke, which is an amazing board, good job Al!

I will be surfing mostly beach breaks and I didn’t specify in my order that it would be a step up. Do you think it matters that much? I sort of want a fuller tail because the waves around where I live do get somewhat hollow but not much and I’d prefer it to be bit looser anyway.

Also, would it be wise to order a 6’8 semipro step up? Or just go for an MSG or Kstep at that point? I am 5’11 and 175lbs.

    (reply)
    • CI Surfboards12-19-11

      Mike,

If you didn’t specify step-up, you will likely get a tail 14″+ which will be loose. Should be fine if you are not just surfing barrels.
If you ride the 6’4″ and like how it feels, then go Semi Pro on the 6’8″, but for sure specify step-up at that size.

Are those modified FCS plugs for the channeled board? And are the 5 fin set ups close to the mckee 5 fin placement?

    (reply)
    • CI Surfboards12-19-11

      Alex,
The plugs are modified only due to having to sand them down to fit the contours of the channels.
Only the rear two fins of the quads are McKee placement.

The same shops will continue to carry the boards. Production has been moved to San Sebastian under the Olatu group. The shapers are trained in Santa Barbara and the designs are all sent direct from santa barbara. You should be able to contact your local dealer and still order the board.

EPS construction is available through any authorized CI dealer.

    Hi CI,

I am looking for an everyday board to fit between my dumpster dive and my 6 ft 6inch, semi gun that I use for bigger days. I am 5 ft 6.5 in, 74 kg and above average fitness. I am an average surfer who surfs around 4 days per week (waves permitting). I really like the look of the semi pro with the five fin setup and pin tail. What dimensions would you recommend for this board and are there any other boards that you would recommend. I live in Sydney and know of a couple of shops close to me that sell your boards of the rack but if I required a custom board is there anyone you would recommend I go too.

    Thank you for your advice.

    Hi boys,
Since everyone else is looking for advice, thought I’d take a shot. I’m doing a Mentawais boat trip in a few months and am looking for a new go-to barrel machine to take along. My round pin Tangent (6′ 1″ x 2 1/2 x 19 1/4) has really grown on me, I surfed it in France last year and Hawaii a few weeks ago and it was great. Now I’m thinking of going round pin semi-pro? Never ridden one though. I prefer slightly beefier boards with more paddling power (I’m 5′ 7″ 155lbs). My flyer dims are 6′ 0″ x 19 1/2 x 2 1/4. Mucho gracias -Matt

    (reply)
    • CI Surfboards01-05-12

      Matt,

If you like the way your round pin Tangent (6′ 1″ x 2 1/2 x 19 1/4) paddles and surfs, think about a Semi Pro in the same dims. Designed by the same guy afterall, the have similar feels.

    CI guy,

Just want to chase up some info on the Deep Six.

    Standard bottom contours?

Options for having it configured as a 6-channel bottom?…or is it more recommended as with the standard bottom contours.

Looking to throw this board into anything between head high to head high and a half.

At present i ride a 6’2 – 20 1/2 – 2 1/2 Wizard sleeve and comfortably put it into anything just over head high.

If you could throw in some recommended dimensions that’d be magic too.

    Thanks a bunch -

      Mitch,

Kelly had one with 6 channels this year on the North Shore, which he rode for the first time in his last second heat win over John John.
So yes you can give those a go.
Without knowing why you can’t ride your 6’2″ in o-head (what’s it not doing) hard to give you advice on another size.

        CI guy,
        Thanks for your reply.
The 6’2 hasn’t failed me so far, it paddles well, makes small days fun and it hasnt yet faltered in surf around head high, but im looking around for a good step-up board to take as a second board to travel this year.
I was looking to the Deep Six as a step-up because of its slightly wider nose and drawn in step-up style tail, and thought that it would be unreal as a step-up because it would potentially paddle really well.
A number of people around me had recommended channel bottom boards and I was wondering what effect the channels have on the board, and whether they work well in a step-up?
And can the board still be configured as a five-fin option with 6 channels, or is it only to be set up as a thruster?
Sorry for bombarding you with questions, just trying to find something unreal.

      Mitch,

Channels work serve to make the board feel more positive and drivey in powerful waves. The Deep Six was designed as a board for Backdoor and Pipe, Kelly marrying a semi gun back half to a hyrbid front. Your 6’2″ should work in overhead waves, but if you wanted to go a couple inches longer and add channels you could.

I saw a custom made Fred Rubble with Team Glass (S cloth) with the following dimensions: 5’11 x 19 1/4 x 2 7/16. This board is so light and does not seem to be thick at all (compare to my 5’8 wizard sleeve at 2 3/8). What would be the volume on that board?

    Thanks

    (reply)
    • CI Surfboards02-01-12

      Gugs,
that board should have 29.0L of volume. It sounds like the rails could have been thinned for a team rider so perhaps slightly less, but only half liter or so.

The Semi Pro would be ideal for barrels.
