Kelly Slater’s Quiver for France + Portugal 2011

October 3, 2011 / Kelly Slater, Quivers

Kelly Slater's Quiver for France 2011 Decks

From left to right:

  1. 5’11″ x 18 1/4″ x 2 51/6″ Step up Semi Pro
  2. 5’11″ x 18 1/4″ x 2 51/6″ Step up Semi Pro
  3. 5’9″ x 18 1/4″ x 2 1/4″ Fred Rubble
  4. 5’9″ x 18 1/4″ x 2 1/4″ Fred Rubble
  5. 5’9″ x 18 1/4″ x 2 1/4″ Semi Pro
  6. 5’9″ x 18 1/4″ x 2 1/4″ Semi Pro

All tri, quad or five fin compatible.

Also not pictured but sure to be in his bag, on his way over to France today is the 5’9″ round pin epoxy Fred Rubble he won trestles on, as well as a new 5’9″ x 18 1/4″ x 2 1/4″ round pin Semi Pro epoxy and a remake of the 5’8″ x 18 1/2″ Fred Rubble squash which he broke out in NYC in the final against Owen.

Kelly has been surfing around the Malibu area lately and trying his new sticks. The feedback has been super positive and I would put money that if France is smaller, like it could be this year, those epoxy Fred Rubbles and Semi Pros will be his go to boards. It’s tough because there is always the possibility that the Quik pro France could get big like last year. He has to make sure he has a step up or two in his quiver. A 5’11″ sufficed last year at maxed-out Hossegor. Also, the Rip Curl Pro Portugal, which could also have some solid swell, is directly after France so he has to plan for two back to back events in Europe.

nice set of sticks, never really had time or interest in comp surfing but this year ive started watching more keeping an eye on what boards are being ridden. i can clearly see why kelly has been champ so many times.

What’s the difference between the 5’9″ Semi Pro and the 5’9″ Rubble in terms of functionality?

    (reply)
    • CI Surfboards10-04-11

The Rubble will grovel a little better as it has a wider tail and fuller rails.

  8. DX10-04-11

Is the one on the far left a Rubble or a Semi-Pro? The text says Rubble but the lam on the bottom says Semi-Pro…

    (reply)

      Good catch.
      It is a SEMI PRO

      (reply)
  9. chello10-04-11

what are the nose and tail measures on those?? are they a bit fuller than normal?

    (reply)
    • CI Surfboards10-04-11

      The 5’9″ Semi-Pros at 12″ Nose and 14 1/4″ Tail
Noses are getting a little wider, the new semi-pros we are building are coming with 12″ Nose
      The 5’11″ Semi Steps are 11 3/4″ to 12″ Nose and 13 3/4″ to 14″ tail.

      The Rubbles
      5’9″ 11 3/4″ and a 12″ Nose and 14 1/4″ tail

Hi again, just out of sheer curiosity, do you have the volume numbers on these boards, particularly the 5-11s? Are the 5-11s close to stock sizing? Thanks!

    (reply)
    • CI Surfboards10-04-11

      Very close.
      We do a stock size at 18 1/4 x 2 1/8 that is 23.4L
Kelly is at 2 5/16 so his may be close to 24L

  15. Doug10-08-11

Following on DXs question regarding volume. I understand Kelly weighs in at 75kg and if his 5’11″ is 24L then he has 0.32L per kilogram of body weight.
Is this the standard board volume/kg body weight you use for other pros you shape for?

For an advanced intermediate surfer what Volume per kg would you recommend? I guess it depends on how strong a paddler you are? Thanks

    (reply)
    • CI Surfboards10-09-11

      Doug,
Kelly rides less volume than all his peers, hard to apply what Kelly does directly to normal humans.
At this time we have not developed a kg to L formula.

Hi, can u guys recommend a board and size for me?
I’m riding 6 2 flyer. I would like to have little more performance but similar volume (if it’s possible). I’m 171cm 78kg.

    (reply)
    • CI Surfboards10-10-11

      Our stock 6’2″ x 19 1/2 x 2 1/2 Flyers are about 32.4L of volume.
      A Rubble is like a turbo-charged Flyer with turbo. the stock 6’2″ x 19 5/8 x 2 1/2 is 31.6L.
That is pretty close but if you want the exact same order it either 19 3/4 or 2 9/16.

      (reply)
  17. jun10-10-11

hi, just a quick board question.
would it be possible to get a board with more performance than my 6 2 flyer but with the same volume?
if there is, which one would you recommend? cheers

    (reply)
  18. CI Surfboards10-10-11

Is there any downside in terms of performance with the flexible in configurations like this when riding as a tri? Do future fcs slots work better than futures? I’ve always wanted to experiment with a quad / tri setup. Thanks.

    (reply)
    • CI Surfboards10-12-11

No one has been able to quantify the effect of FCS vs Futures on flex to our knowledge.

    (reply)
  21. chris10-16-11

I am putting in a custom order for two fred rubbles and one semi pro. Would you call the tails on these boards round pin or just round? Also could i order my semi pro as step up or do i need to give exact nose and tail dimensions? thanks

    (reply)
    • CI Surfboards10-17-11

These are custom, so please tell us if your prefer a round or round pin as we have two different templates.
Also indicate semi-pro “setp up” on the order and we will pull the tail slightly, and this would come with a round pin unless you specify round.

      (reply)
  22. Matt10-17-11

Tell us about the rounded pin Dagger that Taylor’s riding in Portugal! How’s that board manipulated into a step-up?

    (reply)
  23. chris10-17-11

Thanks for the info! One more question would you reccomend A semi pro step up or a fred rubble step up for the Mentawais. I know the semi pro is better in more hollow waves but not sure if the fred rubble will help me get into waves easier with a smaller board?
    Thanks again for your time!!

    (reply)
    • CI Surfboards10-17-11

      Hey Chris,
Are you only taking one board?
Ideally you want both, but if you can only take one take the Semi Pro as the waves are excellent.

  24. Jay10-18-11

    Hi, I plan on ordering Semi-Pro for good surf. I’m 5’7, 140s lbs, Intermediate + ability., currently riding a Fred Rubble 5’9 x 18 5/8 x 2 3/16 which is working great (maybe a little too wide).
Any recommendations for Semi-Pro dims? Thanks!

    (reply)
    • CI Surfboards10-18-11

      5’10 18 1/2 x 2 1/4 24.8L or 5’9 18 /14 x 2 1/4 24.0L
      (your Rubble is 24.5L)
      We reccomend a round tail.

      (reply)
  25. chris10-18-11

No I am going to take 4. Last time I went I had a 6’3 for my step up that was more of a semi gun shape and found out that I would have been better off with a smaller board and less gunny. I am going to order 2 fred rubbles either round tail or round pin to bring as my short boards and then not sure if I should go with the semi pro step-up or a fred rubble step-up something around a 6’0 or 5’11 to replace the 6’3 that I brought last trip there. So my quiver will be 2 fred rubbles, a semi pro step or fredd rubble step, and my 6’6 pin tail which I also brought along last trip. I also have a 6’0 Rookie. By the way I am 5’10 180lbs. Thank you so much for your help and input. just another reason why Channel Isalnds is the best in the business. cheers!

What are the dimensions of the rounded pin Dagger that Taylor rode in Portugal? I went straight to the CI shop and bought my Dagger after I demo’d it when the CI van cruised up to Jalama. I was going to order a Fred step-up or a Proton step-up, but now I’m curious about your thoughts on the Dagger step-up. I love that board and the well placed volume with its turned down rails. Thank you very much.

    (reply)
    • CI Surfboards10-19-11

Waiting to hear back from Taylor on exactly what he was riding.
The Dagger is a great board and allows us to hide volume in there.
Order it 2″ to 4″ longer about 1/8″ thinner with your same width, and we can pull the last 12″ in to make it a magic step up

      Andre,
Try a 5’10″ or 6’0″ neckbeard or Dumpster Diver
      A 6’2″ Dagger
      or
      A 6’3″ Fred Rubble

what diff would epx epoxy fred rubble round tail give me compared to fglass. im 5′ 10 90kg what size would you rec in epx epoxy.

    (reply)
    • CI Surfboards10-23-11

The epoxy would feel lighter and tend to feel like it rides “on top” of the water.
So the team that rides these like them in waves head high and under.
      Your size at expert level would be 6’2″ x 19 5/8″ x 2 1/2″

    Hi

I want to have the new fred rubble surfboard but I need some advice on which dimensions to choose, i’m an (novice-average) surfer 5’9 and 80kg, surf 3′ to 5′ foot waves, what dimensions should I get my fred rubble?

    (reply)
    • CI Surfboards10-23-11

      Try a Rubble at 6’1″ x 19 3/8 x 2 7/16
Should be plenty of volume for easy wave catching and allow you to do any turn/trick you want

hard to say without knowing your ability.
      Assuming an intermediate:
5’6″ Neckbeard or 5’6″ Pod for the small stuff
5’10 Fred Rubble for the mdium stuff
6’1″ Rookie or Cheese Stick for barrels

    (reply)
    • CI Surfboards10-28-11

Short as possible and 31L put you on a stock Semi Pro 12 at:
      6’2″ x 19 1/4 x 2 71/16 – 29.5L
      6’3″19 1/8 x 2 7/16 – 31.5L

      Kosuke,
Not sure of your ability level. But you may prefer ride your boards long for your height.
      At intermediate we would suggest a 5’6″ Rubble 18 1/4″ x 2 1/16″
A round pin semi pro step up for you could be 5’8″ to 5’10″ use the same width and go 2 1/8″
