Surf photos by Dave Schauber, shaping bay photos by Travis Lee
The making of the Sperm Whale. Dane cuts into the blank with the planer.
Time to double check his outline.
Here's the finished product. The Sperm Whale, ladies and gentlemen.
It's a quad!
Now it's time to get this baby in the water.
Looks like a cover for Longboarder Magazine.
Redefining lateral surfing. Dane lays it on edge.
Dane takes the Sperm Whale on the high line. Connecting the dots from point to cove.
Top turn, check.
With such a unique shape, the board hardly ever takes the same line.
After another long leg-burning right-hander at Rincon, Dane makes the treck back up the point. Sperm Whale underarm.
How do I get one
What dims is it and what is the concave like? Cheers
Shaped by Dane and Dane does not measure when he shapes… safe to say the bottom is not symmetrical either! Just goes off feel
Hi. Will the Sperm Whale be made available for purchase? Thanks.
We have not heard from Dane if he would like to make this a model. If so, it would take a few months to dial this in.
We can however, being a custom board manufacturer, build almost anything should you want a copy. Contact firstname.lastname@example.org or call 877-surf-1-CI for a custom price quote on a prototype.
what is close to though
5’8″ x 19 3/4 x 2 1/2
I know this is the first run at the shape, but he didn’t look like he was surfing any better on it. If anything it looked like a handicap.
Keep in mind Dane shaped this board with a hand-drawn outline, no templates no measurements. It was for fun.
looks like an alaia, i’d love to try one
This looks like a very sweet board. I am really interested in it and hope that it hits the market. It almost seems like it rides more like a long board. It’s small and compact but he was getting some sweet little nose rides off of it. Since I surf mostly longer boards, I would be very interested in getting one to add to my collection. It looks like something I would use on a regular basis. How much do you think that it would cost if it did hit the market?
Very unlikely this shape will be released aside from some custom requests.
Right now as these are not CAD designed and are all one-off hand shapes they run about $800 retail.
wait they are now retail?
Custom reguest only. We have built one so far.
Thanks! That really helps. How would I order one?
e-mail email@example.com or cal 1-877-surf-1-CI and we can point you to your local dealer and how to place the order.
i am 15 and making a board for my gcse resistant peace this is something i could make
Is is possible to get the dimensions on that??
Dane doesn’t measure but we spec’d it out to be 5’8″ 19 3/4 x 2 1/2″ with a few minor dips and swales
I HAVE TO HAVE ONE!!!!
i assume there all one offs though? are custom orders possible?
All one-offs. It was not done on the computer (Dane by hand)so they would have to be hand shaped if you want a custom.
I cant believe that this might not make it to retail, it should at least be a limited addition. Dane would be stupid to not let it go to market, it would have such a big following. Tons of people would buy it because its different from a regular shortboard. Dane is an innovator let Dane be Dane!
looks a little like the wizard sleeve but w/ fatter tail…
logo choice confirms retro influence.
Do you know what kind of fins he is using… I have a very similar board am looking to make it as loose as that (I know Dane is amazing and can do anything, but the fins may have something to do with it).
they look like K2.1 leads and GX trailers, but will confirm with Dane
he actually says he liked the G-AM 4.75 to give more drive, the K2.1 were too loose. So if you want loose you might do the K2.1
Im looking to shape my own board, one that rides similar to a longboard, but is not as long. Would this board be as easy to ride as a longboard or would it be simular in difficulty to say a CI Biscuit??
It’s getting close to a mini-Simmons
Just got on one and they make the conventional look silly
people its a mini sim without any of the good bit that go into it! dont order one of these, go to a local shaper who knows how to shape a minisim, surfermag.com forums would be a good place to start looking and dial in dimensions
Actually it’s something that dane created with Thomas Campbell and shaped from a raw without measuring, and he likely has no idea what “minisim” is. We were not planning on making these until people kept asking for it, have fun.
This board has to hit retail. It will be a crying shame if it doesnt. A lot of potential sales will be lost for Channel Islands if they dont come through. Looks like a super fun board.
Dru – perhaps. Many people are asking for it that it for sure, it’s up to Dane, the designs are driven by the athletes.
Hey, I was just wondering what the rocker is like on this model? Is it shaped like a dumpster diver or rusty Parana style rocker or is it flatter like a long board?
Pretty flat, as opposed to the diver which has a good amount of rocker.
What the heck is a Parana?
What size does dane ride the sperm whale? Also, I ride a neckbeard 5’8×19.75×2.38. what size would I ride a sperm whale?
5’7 ½ x 19 ½ x 2 3/8
5’5 x 21 ¼ x 2 1/16
how muchh smaller should i get my sperm whale than me if im 5 10?
If you have a specific board model question, please refer to the individual board page and leave your inquiry there. Thank you!
