Hello Al and guys at the CI surfboard factory.
What`s the difference, performance wise, between Dane’s first three boards in the picture? They all have the same dimensions. I am looking for my next great short board. I do have a 5′ 6″ Pod, 5′ 7″ Dumpster Diver,(had a 5′ 11″ whip, but recently broke it),still have a 6’1″ K board tuflite (which I like a lot when it gets a little heavy, few feet overhead) and a 6′ 0 Tangent that is a bit too thin (18 1/4, 2 1/8).
I am looking maybe for a short board that help me get waves, and do hard turns. I am from Northern Mexico so I ride all kinds of waves;from mushy small dumpy beach breaks to good overhead points breaks.
I am 5 8″ ( no shoes) 145 to 150 pounds,45 years old and in pretty decent shape.

How much does Dane weigh in at now? I’m 88kgs and thinking bout riding 6.0 x 19 x 2 1/2 (proton or rookie)

    (reply)
    • CI Surfboards11-11-11

Malcolm – Dane fluctuates between 190 and 200.
You could ride those dims only as an advanced surfer.

    Hi CI,
First off this is great. I’ve always wanted to know what the pros ride.
I was surprised how much Dane weighs. He’s a big boy. How tall is he?
His boards seem pretty thin for such a big guy. Jordy’s boards seem to
    have a lot more volume.
Anyway, I’m 6’1″ 180lbs. advanced surfer. I surf Trestles, Huntington Pier,
Newport & Ventura Fairgrounds. I want to get a Rubble for small beach break,
Proton for chest high surf and Step Up Proton for solid over head surf.
Would you please recommend dimensions for each board?
    thanks,
    R.A.

    (reply)
    • CI Surfboards11-14-11

      RA -
      Dane is 6’0″ (approx)
Jordy is a little heavier as well and yes Jordy does like a little more volume.
      Rubble go 6’1″ x 19 3 /8 x 2 7/16″
      Step Up Proton go 6’3″ to 6’6″ x 18 7/8″ to 19″ x 2 3/8″

        I d like to buy the Biscuit, I am 5’10” and weigh 159 lbs.. Please suggest me measures, I thought 5’4” 19 3/4 2 3/4
        Thank you

        (reply)
        • CI Surfboards02-17-12

Nicolas, the 5’4″ would work well for your height and weight. It has 33.2L of volume and rated for a 175lb expert.

          (reply)
          • nicolas02-19-12

5’2” would be too short for me? What is its volume?..I am an intermediate surfer..thank you..

          • CI Surfboards02-21-12

Nicolas, The Biscuit is meant to ride skatey with more volume that you usually ride. The 5’2″ has 31.9L
Rated for 165lb expert. 5’2″ or 5’4″ comes down to personal preference now

          • paul02-22-12

Hiii..about biscuits..I always ride it in mushy days (waves like a knee) whitout waves power in Italy.. Now which fins I have to get?? I am 160lbs. Channel Island suggested kelly 2.1 fcs but I m afraid that stop my board and I can reach speed..
            Answer me please.

          • CI Surfboards02-24-12

Paul – that board has a wide tail, so to maximize drive get the 4.75″ (bigger) Merrick templates.

What would board and dimensions would you recommend as an all around board from waist high mush to overhead hurricane swell surf in Florida. I’m 6’0” 175-180 pounds and live in Cocoa Beach and would like to know what you recommend for the weaker/mushier waves of that area that would also work for the bigger hurricane swells that we get in the summer.

    THanks!

    (reply)
    • CI Surfboards11-16-11

      FLA,
Boards that works in waist high mush and also overhead hurricane swell don’t really exist. If it did all surfers would just ride one board. The most versatile would be a Fred Rubble. At your size a 6’1″ x 19 3/8 x 2 7/16 could work. It’s sweet spot would be chest to cieling high.
Ideally you would have a Pod or Biscuit for the mush and a Rookie or Semi Pro for the Hurricane Surf.

Hey CI im about 6’1″ 185 intermediate surfer from fl. I was looking at getting either a fort knox or custom ordering a round tail fred. I currently ride a 6’0 black flag whip as my daily driver but am looking for something to work in head high and above and for travel. Just curios about the differences in the boards, and what dims i should be looking at in both poly or and for eps since its a bit floaty.

      Yann,

      Those boards seem a little long for your height, but at those lengths and assuming you are intermediate, do 5’8″ x 18 7/8 x 2 1/4 ” and 6’0″ 18 3/4 x 2 3/16.

    CI,

I just moved to San Francisco and am now facing the unforgiving beach breaks and strong current here… no channels, no reef breaks like what I prefer at wind and sea and big rock. I’m a novice surfer, 6’1 195lbs. I would like a board that is versatile in an array of california conditions from wind and sea to pismo to fort point. Surf shops up here have been recommending the Rubble (6’6). What is your take? Thanks so much!

    Hey CI,
I have one M4 that really is not my favorite board, and made me not want to surf CI boards.
But now I am really curious about some of the newer, shorter, wider boards CI has introduced. So I am going to the Mentawais next year and am looking for something from CI to bring along. I am 6’0 and 165lbs, been surfing for a while…. My daily board is a 5’8 Spider (South Africa) and 5’10 Arakawa, overhead I use a 6’1 JC. I am looking for that perfect 5’11 for my Indo trip…. Any recommendations (shorter, wider, lots of volume)?

    I appreciate your response…..

    (reply)
    • CI Surfboards12-01-11

      Guga,
The Fred Rubble would suit you. 5’11″ x 19 x 2 5/16 (27.2L) Suited for an expert ar 175 to 185lbs, you could go 5’10″ – consider ordering it as a round tail for Indo.

Just wondering, I’m about 6’0 and about 170lbs. I’ve got a 5’7 Dumpster, and it goes sick! Im looking at getting either a proton or rubble as a standard shortboard and wondering what sizes you’d recommend? Intermediate surfer been surfing about 8 years – Thanks!!!

    (reply)
    • CI Surfboards12-01-11

Rubble will be more forgiving, but if you surf top to bottom waves more often then go Proton.
      Rubble: 5’11 x 19 x 2 5/16 (27.2L) or 6’0 x 19 1/8 x 2 3/8 (28.6L)
      Proton: 6’2 x 18 7/8 x 2 5/16 (27.8L)

      For expert we recommend 5’9 x 18 5/8 x 2 3/16 (24.5L) and for advanced 5’10 x 18 7/8 x 2 1/4 (25.9L).
These sizes will allow you to get the volume for 162lbs and keep the shortest rail in knee to head.

Im trying to figure out the best size Fred Rubble for chest to ceiling high waves for me.
Im 32 yrs, 6 foot amd I fluctuate between 199 and 191 lbs (closer to the upper end right now).
I mostly ride Sydney beach breaks and also travel a fair bit chasing down swells mostly in Australia and Indonesia.
As for my ability level, Ive been surfing a lot in the past 3 yrs (patchy here and there before that), will happily surf hollow reef breaks. Not doing fancy manourvers, im doing cut backs, and starting to crank top my turns and hold my rail through them.
Currently riding a JS Blackbox 6’1 x 20 x 2 1/2 (full rails) for small waves (this feels a bit over volumed for me now especially when the waves have a little bit of punch in them) and for my standard shorty for overhead and punchy reef breaks I’m riding a Chilli 7 Curve 6’4 x 19 x 2 1/2 (refined rails) – at my current upper a end of my weight range this feels just slightly undervolumed for me for getting into bigger waves early. Cheers!

      matt,
      According to our math, you should give the 6’2 x 19 5/8 x 2 1/2 a shot. (31.6L)
Should fit nicely between the two boards you are currently riding.

      Kalum,
no problem, looks like you will be getting some good waves.
depending on how long you are going (or big) just keep the same dims we said before, 16 3/4 x 1 7/8 or 2″, and order the boards longer.
Make sure to specify step-up, and round pin.
The Rookie will be more forgiving, the Proton tighter turning in critical sections.

Ci, need advice on a new step- up board. My current ci quiver consist of a 5.10 d diver, and a 6.2 flyer. Need another step-up since this last swell retired my old custom I have ridden. I’m 5’9 185, primarily surf San Diegos beach and reef breaks. Looking for something for when blacks and the cliffs are overhead so need some paddle power as well. Thanks

      Marco,
You have several options depending on how big (wave) you want to go.
If you just want the next size up from your Flyer, look at a Step-Up round pin Rookie or a Ft Knox round tail. Look at 6’4″ to 6’6′, about 1/4″ to 1/2″ narrower than your Flyer and the same thickness.
If you are going double o-head or slightly bigger, look at a 6’8″ to 6’10″ K-Step at the same dimensions described above.

    Hi Ci,

I’m looking for dimensions and a board recommendation. I need something that can catch really easy, move lightening fast off the drop on crummy 1-3ft days in venice while being able to cut around closing sections. I weight 170 and am 6’3. I ride a 6’4 19 3/4 x 2 1/2 flyer currently and it’s starting to feel a little long and getting better use in 4+

1-3 crumbly Venice huh? Look at a 5’10″ Biscuit Fischcuit or Motorboat
That 6’4″ Flyer (35.5L) is rated for an expert at 225lbs, prob a little too long a full for you

At your weight and ability you should look at something around 25L to 27L
      Stock dims would be a Fred Rubble 5’10″ x 18 3/4 x 2 1/4 at 25.7L

    Hey Al,

I had been riding one of your 6’0” Rookies and love it.
I live in costa rica and boards here cost a fortune so I want to make sure i get this one right. I am 5’10” 140 lb and looking for a solid board for waist to a few feet overhead waves.

Dont make it to the beach as much as id like to, so I always want a board that will work in most conditions. I loved my rookie, but looked at a rubble, and a Dumpster diver. Love the diver concept, but i dont do airs (I am young and would to learn) and wondered how it would perform for someone of intermediate-advanced.
Anything from beach break to the occ. reef and a few long left point breaks

Am I better off sticking with another rookie or trying something else out. Proton maybe…. haha as you can tell Im all ears, but needing to buy. Any info would help.

    thanks

    (reply)
    • CI Surfboards01-18-12

      Zack,

The Proton is a highly specialized board with extreme rocker, best suited for advanced surfers in good waves. Not our first recommendation.
The Rookie is a good all-rounder. 6’0″ is about right for you. But it’aways fun to try something new.
M-BMs are discontinued, not our recommendation.
Rubble is a great all-rounder, you could ride this one 5’10″ and still paddle better that your Rookie.
The Diver is single concave with curve, you could ride a 5’7″ easy but make sure to keep it in the pocket as it has a ton of curve and works best on rail.
You can put a round tail on any of these, will smooth out your turns but not as apt to break the tail free.

are the fred rubble step up just rounded pin version of the shorter boards? i just got a 6’0 x 19 1/8 rubble and love it, but want to order something for when its a bit bigger, i 5’11 170 and probably on the wrong side of average surfer. ive had a couple different step-ups but kinda felt that they were too knifey, or were a bummer if i made the wrong board choice and the waves werent totally firing. so i thought the rubble would be something to look into. (like some paddle+ live in orange country with a lot of “softer waves”) thanks for all your help!

    (reply)
    • CI Surfboards01-18-12

      Joe,
If we are building a step-up version the shaper will generally pull in the nose and tail and tune the rails slightly more. However the goal on the Step Up Rubbles is to keep volume and a user freindly board, not one of those knifey stiff old school style step-ups.

      (reply)
      • Joe Harrington01-18-12

so just mark in the order, pull in slightly for better, bigger waves? any thoughts on dims for it. riding a 6’0 19 1/8 2 3/8 rubble now, standard shorty used to be 6’1 18 7/8 2 3/8. like 6’3 18 7/8 or maybe 6’4 with that width?

        (reply)
        • CI Surfboards01-18-12

Joe you are on the right track with the 18 7/8. Just specify “STEP UP” in your order and we will adjust accordingly during shaping.
Make sure to include height and weight
6’3″ or 6’4″ is academic, whichever sounds better to you. The shorter will be slightly looser.

    i’m an intermediate surfer,

    height 5’7 , weight 165

Now I know should look at something around 25L to 27L

But my MTFa I wanna more volume, so I should resize (5’9″ wide?? thin??) (What dims and volume would you recommend?) Thx

    And how about “Rookie”

What dims and volume would you recommend?

    Thanks~

    (reply)
    • CI Surfboards01-24-12

      Alex,
The MTF should be ridden your same height or even shorter, if you want more volume, go wider and thicker.
      Your 19 1/4 x 2 1/4 is barely 26L.
      If you go 19 3/8 x 2 3/8 you would be at 27L.
      On the Rookie go 6’1 x 18 5/8 x 2 1/4 which is 26.6L

Translates to Fred ranges at the folloing
      5’11 x 19 x 2 5/16

    Hi guys,
first of all, thanks for your great boards, i have spent 15 years surfing and since 6 I exclusively use Al’s shapes.
At moment I own a Flier 6’0, a Fishcuit 5’10 and a Semi Pro 6’3 for when it’s overhead and my surf trips. I travel all around but I normally live in Spain, so I have to face a lot of choppy, mushy and windy days, as well as lack of powerful waves. I was looking for something more versatile and useful than my Flier for smaller waves, some board that can fit between the Flier and the Fishcuit but eventually substitute the Flier, since it’s already pretty old.
I checked the Dumpster Diver and the Motorboat, what you recommend? Which dimensions? My goal is improving my surf also in small conditions.
My weight is 154 pounds, height 6′ – level advanced
Thank you in advanced for your help!!!

Angelo, Nice quiver you have there.
If you are looking to replace your Flyer, consider the Rubble and the Dagger.
A 5’8″ Motorboat could better replace your fishcuit (which sounds too big for you at advanced?)
For intermediate to advanced consider the following
      Consider a Fred R 5’10″ x 18 7/8 x 2 1/4 is 25.9L
      Dagger 5’10 x 18 3/4 x 2 3/16 is 26.4L

      • angelo01-25-12

Thanks a lot for the answer!
actually I should have bought the Fishcuit at 5’8, but since i never rode something so short and fat, I really couldn’t imagine it would have worked! LOL
I would like to substitute my flier with something way more versatile on small waves (knee to chest powerless, most of the time), without being a fish or a quad.
What about the Dumpster Diver, my dealer here has a 5,9 x 20 x 2 1/2, maybe too big for me? Would this board fit between a Motorboat and a Flier, as a regular board for the conditions we have here (mediterranean and basque beach breaks)?
thank you for your patience, I’m looking forward to buy the new baby this weekend!

        • CI Surfboards01-25-12

          Angelo,
The Dumpster is the perfect model between the Motorboat and Flyer.
Especially for beach break due to the rocker.
A 5’9″ is rated for an expert surfer at about 200lbs, might be a little big!

      Frank,
We have done a few Machado models, but the one named “Machado Model” saw several versions between 1996 to 2001 and then became the Eagles Wing in 2002. This design generally was low volume, and had a combo of soft forward rails, double concave with a pulled square tail, and would work well for you in chest to overhead waves that have some power. Would not be good for you as a small wave board.

Hi, I am 165 pounds and 5’11. I am a fairly strong intermediate surfer been surfing since 96. However I ave just come off a board with over 30 ltrs volume and a bit scared to jump down too much in volume. A fred rubble 6.1 X 19 1/4 X 2 7/16 has come up but I have to grab it by tomorrow or its gone! eek.

If that doesn’t sound like a good fit, could you possible recommend a size that you think might work? Maybe even in a flyer? Thanks so much for your time. I am sure you wont get to this query in time so I will have to grab this board and cross my fingers! But any advice would be much appreciated.

Craig hopefully you have not lost your window on that Rubble as its right around 29.8L and would work a intermed to advanced at 175 to 185 nicely.
A Flyer at the same size would roughly have the same volume.

    (reply)

      Eli,
Yes we can pretty much build whatever you want. Some guys love that feel under their feet. Just make sure to specify how deep you want the concave and on how much of the board. A diagram would be perfect. You seem tall and light. Due to your weight you could ride a 5’10″ 18 7/8 x 2 1/4. If you are really going to scoop the deck order a 5’11 x 19 x 2 5/16 and keep in mind you will lose volume.

So the next best thing is a good condition flyer I’ve been negotiating to buy off a guy. The board is 5’11” x 18 7/8” x 2 1/4″

Im 5’10 maybe 5’11 and 165 pounds reasonably strong intermediate. you think I will go Ok on this size? Thanks so much.

By the way, the board I am an inch away from buying is a 5’11 ‘FLYER F’. I am a little confused as to where that fits into things. Is that a flyer 1 or 2? or something else. The reason I ask is that I am after the flyer but not the flyer 2.

Thanks again, I will stop pestering you now. ;)

That Flyer F is about 26.7L, we rate this for a 180 expert or 170 advanced. The “F” is a squash tail Flyer 1 version, the Flyer 2 would have a pulled swallow tail and gnerally narrower overall at 5’11″.

At roughly 195-200LBS and 6’2″, bordering intermediate, I am looking at the FR 6’3 for 2-3FT softer beach break waves if you think that would work?
Secondly, I’d like to stick with one model – If i were to go for a FR, what size dims would you recommend for a FR custom step up – I’m considering going 6’5 or 6’6″ x 19 1/4 – 19 1/2 by 2 9/16. Would that more or less work out to the same volume as a 6’3 FR (33L), and would the FR step up be versatile enough for chunkier beachies, points and reef breaks? Thanks.

I have a quick question for you guys.
A new Shipment of boards is coming in (I live in Costa Rica so we dont get you new models very often) and would like either a Dumpster Diver or Fred Rubble. I currently ride a 6’0” rookie and am 5 10 140 lbs.
I need a board for waist to head high surf and sometimes bigger, mostly beach break but also a point at times. Which of these boards should I choose, and why? Size? I am intermediate-advanced. I have no problem catching waves, but would like a board that would allow me to hone in my skills on smaller waves and even learn to air. Is a 5’6” DD to small for me or should i go the rubble route?
Can I get a volume ratio on these in comparison to my Rookie? dont know all of the Dimensions, but it is a standard 6 0
    Thanks

    (reply)

At 140lbs and intermediate you would ride stock dims of
      Diver 5’4 x 19 X 2 1/8 23.7
      Rubble 5’8 x 18 ½ x 2 1/8 23.4L
      A stock Rookie 6’0 x 18 3/8 x 2 3/16 is 25.3L and rated for an intermediate at approx 150lbs.

A 5’4” would suit me well in surf in what size ranges? I know its meaty, but man that sounds small. How would it hold in head high? or even if I went up to like 5”6”, would you say that just defeats the purpose of even owning the board, as it would be to big for me.

The 5’4″ would work from knee to about a foot or two overhead. The Diver has a good amount of rocker so it can handle the juice. A 5’6″ might feel corky, but if you are more skatey vs carvey then that can be ok.

Owned and still own a lot of Channel Islands boards. Currently, my quiver consists of a 5′ 4″ FW Sweet Potato, 5’11 Stretch Quad Bat Tail, 6′ 0″ CI Whip, and a 6’4″ CI MBM. I now live in Hawaii (Oahu) and have been surfing good waves. Chest to overhead waves. I consider myself an intermediate to low advanced surfer. All of my boards were purchased on the east coast. I am surfing some pretty powerful, punchy waves in comparison. Would like your opinion on what would suit me here best. I’m 5′ 7″ 148 lbs. I’ve been looking at the Proton, Semi-Pro, Cheesestick, and Fred Rubble. Thank you.

    Jason

Hi, another black flag whip has come up at 5’10 X 18 7/8 X 2 1/4. Can you please tell me the volume of that and what size guy it would be rated for? Thanks!

    Also, could you tell me the volume of a Fred Rubble 5’11 X 19 X 2 5/16

    Thanks for all your help.

Craig, hopefully we didn’t miss the boat again, surf has been good out here so we get a little side-tracked.
25.4L on that Black Flag for a 155lb expert and 27.2L on the Rubble for a 185lb expert.

    Hi there,
Am 41 yrs old, surfing over 30 years, 6’2 and 170lbs, live in Perth Western Australia but not surfing the little beachies here too much. Not busting airs but charging everything else, still pumped, fit and charging at say 90%.
Average 3 trips to Bali a year to get waves, not chasing the bigger stuff (double overhead +) rather barrels to 6ft (waist to head and a half), so down the line reefs and some beachies. Have been riding a 5’9 x 19 3/4 x 2 3/8 Dumpster (~31L?) for 18 months in everything, love the float to help paddling and long sessions but am looking to add to this to get a properly functional quiver of 3 boards. (No doubt my Dumpster can come down in volume too, though at 6’2 I don’t think I want to lose too much length – what would you suggest in going custom? shaving off a bit of width and thickness? how much?
    Next board in the quiver? Rubble sounds right and am considering 5’11 x 19 x 2 5/16 (27.2L) or 6’0 x 19 1/8 x 2 3/8, (28.6) what would be your suggestion?
Have been looking at the Semi Pro (in Kelly dims) also but thought it maybe a bit more refined than the Rubble, less forgiving and less of an all rounder. Now the SP12 comes out, looking like a cross between the Rubble and the Semi Pro. I don’t have any volume stats for this other than the ones of your stocklist. What dims should I be looking at for a SP12? How would it differ from the Rubble?
    Thanks for your help

    hey CI.
Im 5’11 and hover around 200 lbs ( hoping to drop about 10-15 )
surf typical south Florida surf at an intermediate level. Have been riding a 6’1 flyer which im sure is 2 small for me due to me going over the handle bars often.
    thinking about grabbing a RUBBLE
any recommendations on dims would be appreciated.

      Kyle,
An expert surfer at your weight would ride a stock 31.6L board at 6’2 x 19 5/8 x 2 1/2. We would recommend going shorter wider and thicker due to your height.
      At intermediate you could go stock 33.0L 6’3 x 19 ¾ x 2 9/16 or custom 6’2 x 19 7/8 x 2 5/8 or even 6’1″ x 20 x 2 5/8.

Why did dane ride a 6’0 and not his usual 5’11?

    thanks

Usual and Dane no longer are to be used in the same sentence.
He had boards between 5’4″ and 6’2″ when he left.

CI Help me! I will be in central america for quite a while and I need some boards. I know that I am dying for a dumpster diver but torn between a Rookie, Rubble, and a remix. Beach breaks and point breaks for me. 5’9” 140 ish and at an interm level. Can you size me up for a diver, is a 5’6” to big or 5’4” to small? I have owned a 6’0” rookie and loved it but if im getting a diver, I am looking just for a good all around SB that advances my surfing but doesnt leave me sinking. Waist to slightly overhead waves,

      Zeke,
Feel free to hit up our new slick volume tool – http://cisurfboards.com/suggested_boards.php
The Diver will be pretty flexible, and you should look at the 5’4″ rather than the 5’6″

      Guido,

Would be good to know what the model and dims of your favorite shortboard is, or at least what you ride mostly.
      Based off what info you have provided, the best bet would be a range of 6’3″ to 6’6″ K-Step. 18 1/2 or 18 3/4 x 2 5/16

    CI,

    Im 5’8″ 150 lbs and am interested in getting a Fred Rubble, either a 5’9 or a 5’10. Which one do you recommend? I normally surf a 5″ll 18-3/8 2-1/4 or a 6’0″ 18-3/8 2-1/4.

    Thanks,

    Jorge

    Hey,

I am looking for the perfect board for all the conditions of GOld Coast australia, what would you recommend ? I kind of really like the Fred Rubble.

I am 6″2 and 78 kilos, what size would you recommend ?

    Thanks so much

      Lucas –
      78kg = 172 lbs
      Start here http://cisurfboards.com/suggested_boards.php
While no board suits all conditions, the Rubble is quite versatile and was ridden quite a bit during this year’s Snapper contest.
      Consider a FRED 61 x 19 1/4 x 2 7/16 29.9 to start, as your dims are long and lanky you may want to go custom 6’2″ x 19 x 2 3/8.
      Cheers
      CI

Hey Ci, I saw that Dane had a channel bottom
In his quiver for the billabong pro tahiti. I was thinking of getting one for a trip to the metawai for getting barreled but am scared that I won’t be able to throw hard turns. Under what conditions do these work best?
    Regards, Marcio

    Hi CI
i am 6’2, 190/200 lbs intermediate surfer; i just came across a used 300 dollars 5’6 Biscuit , do you think it would suit me in small/medium surf?
I already have a 5’11 rocket fish that does well in small surf but was looking for a board to work and turn well in small and medium surf, bit like a Dwart for what i’ve heard.
Do you think the 5’6” Biscuit could be that board?

    Cheers

      Gualtier,
Apologies on our lag for getting back to you.
At 5’6″ it would be 34.3L aand function well as a skatey medium wave board.
      cheers CI
