HUNTINGTON BEACH, California/USA (Monday, February 20, 2012) – Evan Geiselman (New Smyrna Beach, FL), 18, finished runner-up at the inaugural ASP 6-Star Australian Open of Surfing, marking a stellar result for the start of the young Floridian’s campaign on the men’s ASP World Ranking.

Geiselman, 2010 ASP North America Pro Junior Series Champion, is beginning to establish himself as a serious up-and-coming international threat and was nearly unstoppable in the Manly beachbreak conditions. The goofy-footer fell just short of his first major international victory when he fell to Australian Matt Banting (AUS), 17, in an extremely close final but efforts push him to No. 12 on the men’s ASP World Ranking.

“It was a good match-up, it was really fun surfing against Matt,” Gieselman said. “I really want to congratulate him, he surfed really well, and found a couple of good rights that let him do a couple of airs. I would have loved to have won, but 2nd is a great result. I’m doing the whole ASP Star Series this year and I’m looking to qualify for the ASP World Title Series at the end of the year, so this is a great start for me.”

Geiselman stormed through a mass of elite talent on his way to the Final, besting close friend and 2012 ASP World Tour Rookie Kolohe Andino (San Clemente, CA), 17, with a striking aerial game to assist in his groundbreaking result.

“I’ve been surfing against Kolohe (Andino) since I was 10, it’s always a fun match-up and I’m really glad to get the win,” Gieselman said after his Round of 16 heat vicotry. “On my first wave I got a 7.33 (out of a possible 10), then got a 6.33 under his priority and that put all the pressure on him. I’m really stoked to be through to the Quarterfinals, this is my first good result in a 6-Star and I’m looking forward to the rest of the event!”

The next major ASP event will be the ASP World Tour season opening Quiksilver and Roxy Pro Gold Coast, which boasts a waiting period from February 25 through March 7, 2012.
